Pokémon is heading to Disney+ in a surprisingly tactile new form. The Pokémon Company International and Aardman have confirmed that Pokémon Tales: The Misadventures of Sirfetch’d & Pichu will debut on Disney XD and stream exclusively on Disney+ worldwide in 2027, bringing the Galar region to life through Aardman’s distinctive stop-motion animation.

The announcement arrived on August 28, 2026, during Pokémon XP, a fan convention held alongside the Pokémon World Championships. Aardman and The Pokémon Company also revealed the series’ latest teaser trailer, offering another look at a project that could become one of the most distinctive Pokémon spin-offs in years.

Aardman Gives Galar a Handmade Identity

The Misadventures of Sirfetch’d & Pichu follows its two titular Pokémon as they travel across Galar on a quest to help and protect Pokémon throughout the region. Their missions are expected to go badly with some regularity, but the official premise frames those setbacks as the foundation of an unlikely friendship.

That setup gives Aardman plenty of room to lean into the studio’s strengths. The company is best known for Wallace & Gromit, Shaun the Sheep, Timmy Time, and Morph—projects defined by expressive character animation, physical comedy, and a strong sense of handcrafted detail.

The choice of Galar is particularly fitting. The region debuted in Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield, games whose landscapes, villages, industrial architecture, and rolling countryside already draw heavily from British visual influences. Aardman’s roots and stop-motion style could give those locations a more tangible personality than they have had in the mainline games or previous animated adaptations.

Rather than presenting Galar primarily through the eyes of human Trainers, the new series is told from the Pokémon perspective. That shift could make familiar locations feel less like routes between towns and more like a living wilderness populated by creatures with their own rivalries, alliances, and problems.

Why Sirfetch’d and Pichu Make an Oddly Effective Pair

Sirfetch’d is an unusual lead for a Pokémon production. The evolved form of Galarian Farfetch’d debuted in Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield, and its design naturally lends itself to heroic posturing: the leek lance, the shield-like leaf, and the determined expression all suggest a Pokémon eager to play the gallant knight.

Pichu, meanwhile, brings a very different energy. Its smaller size and younger appearance create an immediate contrast with Sirfetch’d’s self-serious warrior image, making the partnership an obvious source of comic friction. The series description promises peril, rivalries, extraordinary Pokémon, and “endless laughs,” and this pairing appears designed to support both the adventure and the comedy.

That does not necessarily mean the show will be aimed only at young viewers. Pokémon has long balanced broad comedy with surprisingly emotional stories, and Aardman’s work often rewards adults who appreciate visual timing, character quirks, and production craft. A Pokémon series built around physical stop-motion performances could appeal to longtime fans who have already seen multiple versions of the franchise’s familiar formula.

More Pokémon Are Joining the Journey

The latest presentation also confirmed additional Pokémon appearances, including Impidimp and Appletun. The broader cast has not been fully detailed, but the promise of a “wonderful cast of Pokémon” suggests Sirfetch’d and Pichu will not be travelling through an empty version of Galar.

That regional focus should give the series a clear identity. Galar includes everything from pastoral farmland and ancient ruins to dense urban spaces and dramatic wild areas, creating a varied backdrop for episodic adventures. Impidimp could fit naturally into mischievous or rival-driven stories, while Appletun’s presence hints at the kind of gentle, eccentric character work that Aardman handles especially well.

The Pokémon Company previously shared new artwork for the project at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival on June 21, 2026. Aardman also offered an early first look in July 2025, confirming that the production would use stop-motion and focus on the Pokémon world from the creatures’ point of view.

Disney’s Pokémon Deal Expands the Franchise’s Reach

The Disney arrangement is significant beyond this single series. Under the announced global distribution deal, Pokémon Tales: The Misadventures of Sirfetch’d & Pichu will debut on Disney XD and stream exclusively on Disney+ in 2027. The agreement also brings Pokémon the Series: The Beginning to Disney XD and Disney+ in the United States and select international markets.

For Pokémon, the partnership provides a major mainstream home for new animation at a time when the franchise is continuing to broaden its television identity beyond the long-running Ash and Pikachu era. For Disney+, it adds one of the world’s most recognizable entertainment brands while giving the service an original Pokémon production with a visual style that stands apart from conventional television anime.

The deal may also help the series reach viewers who are not actively following Pokémon game announcements. Aardman’s name carries its own audience, and the promise of handcrafted animation could attract animation fans who might otherwise overlook a Pokémon spin-off. Whether that crossover audience materializes will depend on the eventual episode structure, humor, and release strategy, none of which has been fully revealed.

A Promising Detour Before the 2027 Debut

There is still plenty left to learn, including the number of episodes, the voice cast, and the precise 2027 release window. No gameplay, interactive features, or connection to an upcoming Pokémon game has been announced, so this is best understood as a standalone animated adventure rather than a new game-related project.

What is confirmed already makes the series an intriguing proposition. Pokémon’s character-driven world, Galar’s strong visual foundation, and Aardman’s talent for turning small physical gestures into big comedic moments could be an excellent match. If the studio’s craftsmanship survives the move into Pokémon’s universe, Sirfetch’d and Pichu may deliver a charming, unusually textured adventure when the series arrives on Disney+ in 2027.
