Disney and Pixar’s Toy Story 5 is heading to Disney+ on September 23, 2026, giving collectors and longtime fans their first major opportunity to revisit the latest chapter at home. After opening in theaters on June 19, the film’s streaming arrival marks an important second phase for a franchise that continues to influence everything from premium statues and action figures to plush, playsets, and display-focused collectibles.

The announcement is especially notable because Toy Story 5 pushes the series into a distinctly modern conflict: traditional toys are competing for a child’s attention against connected electronics. For collectors, that premise introduces a fresh visual language while bringing Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Jessie, Bullseye, and several returning favorites back into the spotlight.

A New Chapter Built Around Toys Versus Technology

Pixar’s official synopsis describes Toy Story 5 as “Toy meets Tech,” with the toys confronting the growing influence of electronics in children’s lives. Bonnie’s new favorite is Lilypad, a frog-shaped smart tablet that offers its own solution for helping her connect with friends through a digital space called “The Pond.”

That setup gives the film a natural contrast between handcrafted, familiar playthings and sleek technology-driven character designs. From a collector’s perspective, Lilypad is more than a plot device. The character represents the kind of contemporary concept that could make an interesting companion piece to traditional Toy Story merchandise, particularly in displays built around the franchise’s changing definition of play.

The story also expands beyond Bonnie’s room. Jessie serves as the new sheriff in Bonnie’s toy community, while Buzz becomes her deputy. Woody returns from a mission with Bo Peep and her toy-rescue team, eventually reuniting with Buzz to help locate Jessie and Bullseye after they become separated from the group.

Character Designs Offer Several Display Possibilities

Jessie’s expanded role should be particularly appealing to collectors who felt that Toy Story 4 left room for her to become a stronger leader. Her sheriff identity introduces a new status quo without abandoning the western styling that has always made Jessie one of the franchise’s most visually distinctive characters.

Buzz Lightyear also receives a new role as Jessie’s deputy, complete with a deputy star. It is a relatively simple costume change, but small status details like this often matter in character collecting. A new badge or uniform variation can provide a clear reason to display a new release alongside an older Buzz rather than treating it as a straight replacement.

Bullseye joins Jessie on her mission, and Pixar’s character material places the pair in an unusual situation involving a real-life horse. The premise could create some of the film’s most playful visual contrasts, especially for fans who enjoy displaying Toy Story characters alongside animal figures, western-themed accessories, or miniature dioramas.

The film also introduces several new toys with strong collectible potential. Smarty Pants is a potty-training toy with a deliberately goofy appearance, while Snappy is a toy camera and Atlas is a talking hippo equipped with GPS. Their designs lean into the oddball product concepts that have always given Toy Story its strongest supporting characters: they look like toys first, but their personalities are built around the forgotten or outdated functions they were designed to perform.

Pixar has also confirmed the return of Forky and Karen Beverly, who are now getting married. Their presence keeps the handmade, craft-oriented sensibility of Toy Story 4 alive and should appeal to collectors who enjoy the franchise’s intentionally crude construction details rather than only its polished commercial toy designs.

Hi-Tech Buzz Could Become a Standout Variant

One of the most obvious collector-oriented hooks is the introduction of the Hi-Tech Edition Buzz Lightyear figures. Pixar’s official character information states that 50 of these shiny new Buzz figures unexpectedly wash ashore, remaining locked in Space Ranger mode while trying to understand the real world and find their way back to Star Command.

Although no specific consumer collectible specifications are confirmed here, the concept is immediately recognizable as a variant-friendly design. A high-tech Buzz could translate naturally into multiple formats, including articulated action figures, vinyl figures, statues, or electronic toys. The metallic finish and repeated-character premise also create an opportunity for army-building, particularly for collectors who already display multiple versions of Buzz Lightyear.

Whether the Hi-Tech Buzz design becomes a major merchandise focus remains to be seen, but it has the visual clarity necessary to stand apart from the standard Buzz appearance. For display purposes, that distinction is important: the strongest variants are usually those that communicate their identity from across the shelf.

Pixar’s Handmade Imagination Style

Toy Story 5 is not limited to a conflict between plastic toys and digital technology. Pixar has also described a new visual approach for sequences set inside Bonnie’s imagination. These scenes use a handmade aesthetic inspired by arts and crafts, with pastel chalk techniques, tactile textures, and deliberately exaggerated designs.

That direction could prove especially attractive to model kit builders, statue collectors, and fans who appreciate alternate art styles. The Toy Story universe has traditionally balanced realistic household environments with exaggerated toy proportions, but an imagination-driven presentation gives Pixar room to experiment with rougher surfaces, softer colors, and more unconventional silhouettes.

For collectors, this opens the door to display pieces that do not simply reproduce the familiar film look. A successful imagination sequence could inspire limited-edition statues, art prints, diorama elements, or stylized figures that sit comfortably beside more traditional Toy Story releases without appearing redundant.

Streaming, Physical Media, and the Collector Equation

The Disney+ debut arrives on September 23, one day after reported physical releases on September 22. Pixar Post lists 4K Blu-ray, SteelBook, and DVD editions, along with features including Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, commentary, deleted scenes, a gag reel, and behind-the-scenes material.

For casual viewers, Disney+ will be the most convenient option. Dedicated collectors, however, may still prefer the physical editions, particularly if the SteelBook artwork or packaging gives the film a distinctive place in an existing Pixar shelf. The inclusion of deleted scenes and production features also gives physical media additional archival value for fans interested in character design and the development of the film’s toy concepts.

The timing also makes sense for merchandise collecting. With the movie now moving from theatrical visibility into home viewing, viewers will have more time to study the supporting cast, compare character designs, and decide which versions deserve a place in their collections. Streaming often extends the lifespan of a release beyond its opening-weekend conversation, especially for a franchise with such a deep history of licensed products.

For collectors who already own multiple Woody and Buzz releases, the most compelling additions may not be the obvious leads. Jessie’s sheriff look, Hi-Tech Buzz, Lilypad, Smarty Pants, Snappy, Atlas, and the returning Forky-and-Karen pairing offer more distinctive options for expanding a display without simply adding another standard version of a familiar character.

Collector verdict: Toy Story 5 will likely appeal most to franchise completists, Pixar display collectors, and fans who enjoy unusual supporting characters more than basic hero reproductions. The film’s technology-versus-tradition premise, updated Jessie and Buzz designs, and new roster of eccentric toys give future merchandise a promising range of visual variety. The streaming release on September 23 should make those designs much easier for collectors to evaluate before deciding which pieces belong on the shelf.
