Marvel Comics has unveiled another wave of variant covers for the three debut issues launching its new Midnight Universe. The line officially begins October 7 with Midnight Spider-Man #1, Midnight Fantastic Four #1, and Midnight X-Men #1, giving readers and collectors a closer look at the darker visual identity Marvel is building across the interconnected titles.

The new reveals also establish how Marvel’s variant-cover program will operate across the Midnight line. Covers A through E will follow recurring themes, creating a more consistent framework for collectors, while additional covers beyond those categories will offer more individual interpretations of each series and character.

A darker direction for Marvel’s biggest heroes

Midnight Spider-Man #1 is written by Phillip Kennedy Johnson with art by ScieTronc. Steve Beach provides the regular Cover A, while Ryan Stegman’s Cover B launches the Midnight Bloodbath variant series. As its title suggests, the program will emphasize the gruesome side of the Midnight Universe.

Peach Momoko contributes the Midnight Special Cover C and a matching virgin edition as Cover G. Skan’s Cover D belongs to the Midnight Horror Homage series, while Jeehyung Lee supplies the Midnight Gallery Cover E. The issue also features a three-part connecting variant by Clayton Crain, along with additional covers by Eric Canete and InHyuk Lee.

The selection gives the first Midnight Spider-Man issue a broad visual range, from the regular series branding to painted, horror-inspired, blood-soaked, and connecting designs. For collectors, the issue’s ten-cover lineup makes it one of the most expansive launches in the opening wave.

Fantastic Four meets horror imagery

Midnight Fantastic Four #1 comes from writer Benjamin Percy and artist Kev Walker. Walker’s Cover A establishes the primary look for the series, with Ryan Stegman returning for the Midnight Bloodbath Cover B.

Ben Harvey provides both the Midnight Special Cover C and its virgin edition, while E.M. Gist’s Cover D joins the Midnight Horror Homage program. That series will reinterpret recognizable horror imagery through the characters and atmosphere of Marvel’s new universe.

Jeehyung Lee also contributes a Midnight Gallery cover for the issue. Rod Reis supplies another variant in both standard and virgin editions, and the design appears to evoke the visual language associated with The Thing—an especially fitting connection for a darker Fantastic Four project. Leinil Francis Yu and Clayton Crain round out the remaining announced variants.

The cover lineup suggests that Marvel is treating the Fantastic Four title as more than a conventional superhero reinterpretation. The horror homage, gallery portrait, and Reis variant each point toward a version of the team shaped by a more unsettling visual world.

Midnight X-Men expands the mystery

Midnight X-Men #1 is written by Jonathan Hickman and drawn by Matteo Della Fonte. Dike Ruan provides the regular Cover A, while Ryan Stegman’s Midnight Bloodbath design continues across all three launch issues.

Skan handles the Midnight Special Cover C and its virgin edition, and Björn Barends contributes the Midnight Horror Homage Cover D. Jeehyung Lee’s Midnight Gallery Cover E continues the recurring portrait-style program, while Clayton Crain’s connecting cover forms the third piece of the crossover design shared by the debut issues.

Alessandro Cappuccio’s Cover H places the spotlight on the Midnight Universe versions of Magneto, Scarlet Witch, and Quicksilver. Ito contributes both standard and virgin editions for the remaining announced variants.

The focus on Magneto, Scarlet Witch, and Quicksilver gives the cover lineup a strong family and ideological dimension, even though Marvel has not disclosed story details beyond the creative team and launch information. Their presence also makes the X-Men issue particularly notable for readers watching how familiar Marvel relationships may be reimagined within the Midnight setting.

What collectors should know before October

All three series go on sale October 7. Each debut issue includes the same broad structure: a regular Cover A, themed Covers B through E, a shared Clayton Crain connecting variant as Cover F, and additional covers that extend through Cover J.

The recurring programs are likely to be a major part of the Midnight Universe’s early identity. The Midnight Bloodbath covers connect the books through their more graphic tone, the Midnight Special variants provide room for distinctive interpretations, the Horror Homage covers tie the line to recognizable genre imagery, and the Gallery covers offer a more polished portrait approach.

That structure should appeal to readers who want a single representative cover for each launch, as well as collectors pursuing complete sets or specific artists. Virgin editions add another layer for variant-focused buyers, while the connecting covers offer a visual incentive to pick up all three debut issues.

Marvel has indicated that another round of variant-cover reveals is scheduled for the following Thursday. For now, these covers provide the clearest preview yet of how the publisher plans to present the Midnight Universe: familiar Marvel icons filtered through horror, violence, atmosphere, and a deliberately darker aesthetic.
