NECA is returning to one of its most recognizable Universal Monsters designs with an upcoming Son of Frankenstein – Ultimate Frankenstein’s Monster 7-inch Scale Figure. The first preview image is deliberately brief, but the announcement is notable for one major reason: this appears to be a film-specific take on Boris Karloff’s Monster as seen in the 1939 sequel, rather than another straight reissue of the company’s established 1931 Frankenstein release.

According to the preview announcement, pre-orders are scheduled to open on Friday, August 7, 2026. NECA has not yet publicly detailed the figure’s full accessory lineup, articulation, MSRP, packaging, or expected shipping window, so collectors should treat the current reveal as an early tease rather than a complete product announcement.

A New Chapter for NECA’s Universal Monsters Line

NECA’s Universal Monsters collection made an immediate impression with its 7-inch Frankenstein’s Monster figure based on the 1931 film. That release established a strong visual foundation: a highly detailed Boris Karloff likeness, textured clothing, expressive alternate portraits, interchangeable hands, shackles, and the small but memorable flower accessories associated with the Monster’s gentler scenes.

The existing figure was offered in both color and black-and-white versions, with the color release using a stylized green complexion, dark clothing, weathered paint, and subtle wound details. Published reviews from Toy Hype USA and The Fwoosh consistently praised the sculpt, facial likeness, paint work, and range of posing options. The Fwoosh also highlighted the figure’s expressive head and neck articulation, while Toy Hype USA noted the inclusion of three heads, six hands, shackles, and daisies.

The Son of Frankenstein announcement suggests that NECA is now expanding beyond its initial interpretation of the character. For collectors who have already purchased one or more versions of the 1931 Monster, the appeal will depend heavily on how much of the sculpt is new and how specifically the figure captures the sequel’s appearance.

Why the Son of Frankenstein Version Matters

Son of Frankenstein occupies an important place in Universal’s classic horror history. Released in 1939, the film brought Karloff back as the Monster and paired him with Basil Rathbone as Wolf von Frankenstein, Bela Lugosi as Ygor, and Lionel Atwill as Inspector Krogh. It is also one of the most visually distinctive entries in the original Universal cycle, with a more elaborate Gothic atmosphere and a Monster design that differs subtly from his earlier appearances.

Those differences are exactly what dedicated collectors will be watching for. A worthwhile sequel-specific release should offer more than a familiar body with a new product name. The head sculpt, hairline, facial expression, costume details, proportions, and paint treatment will determine whether this feels like a genuine Son of Frankenstein representation or simply another variation of NECA’s 1931 figure.

Based on the preview alone, it is too early to make a definitive judgment about the sculpt. The image does, however, establish that NECA is positioning the release as its own interpretation rather than presenting it as a standard restock or color variant. That distinction gives the figure considerably more interest for film-accurate Universal Monsters displays.

What Collectors Still Need to Know

The current announcement leaves several important questions unanswered. NECA has not confirmed the final accessory selection, the number of interchangeable portraits or hands, the exact articulation layout, the figure’s finished height, the packaging design, or the suggested retail price. There is also no announced release month or retailer schedule beyond the stated pre-order opening on August 7.

Those omissions are especially relevant because the Ultimate line’s value is often tied to its extras. The earlier Frankenstein’s Monster release benefited from accessories that supported both dramatic and character-driven displays, including the shackles and flowers. A Son of Frankenstein figure could potentially stand on its own with a strong portrait and costume sculpt, but additional film-specific accessories would make it a much more compelling upgrade for returning collectors.

It is also worth keeping expectations measured regarding articulation. The previous Frankenstein’s Monster figure offered a useful range of motion, including ball-jointed head and neck movement, hinged shoulders and elbows, wrist articulation, waist and torso movement, articulated hips and knees, and rocker ankles. Those features made the figure more versatile than its rigid classic-movie silhouette might suggest, but no articulation details have been confirmed for the new release.

Display Potential and Collector Appeal

From a display standpoint, a Son of Frankenstein Monster could become one of the more useful additions to NECA’s Universal Monsters lineup. The film naturally supports a laboratory-themed presentation, and the figure should pair well with other versions of the Monster, Ygor, Wolf von Frankenstein, or a broader black-and-white horror shelf if NECA continues developing the property.

The release will likely appeal most strongly to collectors who prioritize screen-specific character versions, complete film lineups, and Boris Karloff portrayals across multiple Universal productions. Casual fans may be satisfied with the earlier 1931 figure, particularly because it already captures the instantly recognizable Karloff design. Dedicated Universal Monsters collectors, however, are more likely to appreciate the opportunity to distinguish the Monster’s different cinematic appearances.

There is also a practical question of shelf space. NECA has already released multiple Monster variants connected to Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein, making a new version most attractive when it offers a clearly different silhouette or portrait. If the final product delivers a convincing sequel-specific sculpt, it could earn its place as a companion piece rather than feeling redundant.

Collector verdict: This is a promising announcement for Universal Monsters completists and film-accurate horror collectors, but the preview is not yet detailed enough to determine whether it will be an essential upgrade. The August 7 pre-order date is the immediate milestone; the accessory list, final photography, price, and confirmation of the sculpt’s differences from the earlier Frankenstein figure will decide how significant this release becomes.
