Hashihime of the Old Book Town Developer's О̄e Game Gets Manga Adaptation

ADELTA’s mystery-horror visual novel 大穢—rendered in English as Ōe or Great Corruption—is officially making the jump to manga. Titled Ōe: Ariake-hen (Great Corruption: The Dawn Arc), the adaptation will be drawn by Medamayaki and is scheduled to debut in the October issue of Kadokawa’s Young Ace magazine.

The announcement matters to digital-comics fans because Ōe comes from ADELTA, the developer behind the cult visual novel Hashihime of the Old Book Town. While this is a print-manga adaptation rather than a vertical-scroll webtoon, its closed-circle mystery, supernatural atmosphere, and romance-driven character drama give it the kind of genre blend that has long found an audience among manhwa and webtoon readers.

A Detective, an Island Funeral, and a Case That Refuses to Stay Simple

Ōe follows a detective who is sent to a remote island under mysterious circumstances. His assignment is to attend the funeral of an actress while traveling in disguise, but the investigation quickly becomes more complicated when the boat meant to collect him never arrives.

Stranded among the funeral’s attendees, the detective begins to suspect that the apparent mission is only part of a much larger mystery. The strained relationships among the mourners suggest a history of hidden grudges, concealed motives, and secrets that may be connected to the actress’s death. The island setting gives the premise a classic closed-circle structure: a limited cast, an isolated location, and fewer escape routes as suspicion spreads.

ADELTA’s official description presents Ōe as a Showa-era, isolated-location mystery-horror BL game involving one detective and nine criminals. That combination places the title at an intersection of crime fiction, horror, and romantic visual-novel storytelling rather than in a single conventional genre.

What the Manga Adaptation Could Bring to the Mystery

The manga version will be handled by Medamayaki, with the arc subtitle focusing on Ariake. At this stage, the announcement confirms the adaptation and its planned magazine debut, but it does not provide details about the chapter length, serialization schedule, collected-volume plans, or whether the manga will be released officially in English.

That limited information makes the adaptation’s approach especially interesting. Visual novels can spend extensive time inside a protagonist’s thoughts, use branching routes to explore different relationships, and rely on music, voice acting, and carefully timed reveals. A manga must translate those tools into page composition, dialogue rhythm, facial expressions, and the management of information from panel to panel.

For a story built around an island funeral and suspicious attendees, that could be a strong match. Manga can make silence feel oppressive, isolate characters within a page, and use repeated visual details to hint that something is wrong before the mystery explains why. The format may also sharpen the tension between the detective’s official role and the more intimate, emotionally charged relationships surrounding him.

From a webtoon perspective, the same material could also lend itself to deliberate pacing. Long vertical-scroll sequences might emphasize the approach to the island, the emptiness of the shoreline, or the uncomfortable pauses between characters. Whether the published manga uses that kind of decompression remains to be seen, but the source premise offers plenty of visual opportunities for suspense.

ADELTA’s Follow-Up to Hashihime of the Old Book Town

ADELTA is best known internationally for Hashihime of the Old Book Town, a visual novel that originally launched in Japan for PC in 2016. MangaGamer published an English-language PC edition in 2019, while the game later received a PlayStation Vita port in 2018 and a Nintendo Switch version in 2021.

The connection between the two games is important even though Ōe is not presented as a direct sequel. Both projects come from a developer associated with atmospheric mystery, dramatic character relationships, and stories that blend darker themes with romance. For readers who discovered ADELTA through Hashihime, the manga adaptation offers another way to enter the studio’s distinctive storytelling world.

Ōe was released in stages, with the first part arriving for PC in October 2024 and the complete edition following in April 2025. A browser edition for smartphones and Mac was also reported alongside the game’s release information. The manga announcement therefore arrives after the visual novel has had time to establish its full narrative rather than serving as a simultaneous tie-in to an unreleased game.

Why Fans of Dark Romance and Mystery Should Watch It

The appeal of Ōe: Ariake-hen will likely depend on how successfully the adaptation preserves the tension between investigation and emotional intimacy. Readers drawn to straightforward detective stories may appreciate the isolated setting and suspicious cast, while fans of darker romance may be more interested in the way personal loyalties complicate the search for the truth.

It is also a promising format change for a visual novel with a highly controlled atmosphere. The manga will not be able to reproduce every route or interactive choice from the game in the same way, but it can establish a clear visual identity for the island, the funeral, and the people trapped together there. The choice of Ariake for the arc title may also signal a focused adaptation rather than an attempt to summarize the entire game at once.

For now, the confirmed details are straightforward: Medamayaki is adapting ADELTA’s Ōe, the manga is titled Ōe: Ariake-hen, and its serialization is set to begin in the October issue of Young Ace. English publication information and further details about the manga’s scope have not been announced. Until those updates arrive, the adaptation stands as an intriguing bridge between visual-novel storytelling and contemporary manga suspense.
