Hiya Toys is bringing one of the more distinctive Millennium-era kaiju to its EXQUISITE BASIC lineup with a new articulated Megaguirus from Godzilla vs. Megaguirus (2000). The announcement is notable not only because Megaguirus has received relatively little representation in the modern action-figure market, but also because the design presents a very different engineering challenge from the company’s large roster of bipedal monsters.

Measuring approximately 9.75 inches, or 24.5 centimeters, from the spikes on its head to the tip of its tail, the figure is positioned as a substantial display piece rather than a small companion release. With articulated wings, multiple movable limbs, and an included display stand, Hiya’s Megaguirus appears aimed squarely at collectors who want to recreate the airborne battle sequences from the 2000 film.

A Millennium-Era Kaiju With Plenty of Shelf Presence

Megaguirus remains one of the more visually unusual monsters in the Toho catalog. Its design combines the proportions of a giant dragonfly with armored insect anatomy, layered spikes, an aggressive head sculpt, and vivid red abdominal details. That combination gives the character a strong silhouette even before the wings are fully extended.

Hiya’s promotional images emphasize the figure’s sharply defined armor surfaces and textured insectoid body. The sculpt appears particularly focused on the overlapping plates and ridged surfaces across the torso, abdomen, and limbs. Those details should help the figure avoid the overly smooth appearance that can sometimes affect large insect-based characters in articulated form.

The head is another important feature. Megaguirus’s compound eyes and elongated facial structure are central to the character’s identity, and the prototype appears to preserve the monster’s predatory expression rather than softening it for mass-market presentation. The layered spikes around the head and upper body also add visual depth when the figure is displayed at eye level.

Wings, Flight Poses, and the Engineering Challenge

The most immediately appealing feature is the articulated wing system. Hiya Toys has designed the figure to support poses with the wings fully spread, partially folded, or angled for a diving attack. For a character whose on-screen presence is defined by speed and aerial movement, that flexibility is arguably more important than a large number of interchangeable parts.

The limbs are also articulated, allowing Megaguirus to be posed in aggressive attack stances or suspended above a display base. The included stand should prove especially useful here. Unlike a standard upright kaiju, Megaguirus is likely to look most convincing when presented in flight, with the body tilted forward and the wings positioned asymmetrically to suggest motion.

There is an important collector consideration, however: large articulated wings can create their own display limitations. Even if the figure’s body occupies a relatively modest footprint, the fully spread wings may require considerably more horizontal shelf space. Collectors planning a Millennium-era Godzilla display will want to account for that before committing to a crowded detolf or enclosed cabinet.

Paintwork Built Around Dark Insect Tones

The announced paint scheme uses dark tones across the wings, with brown and gold gradients intended to capture Megaguirus’s film appearance. The effect is more nuanced than a simple black wing treatment, and the variation should help preserve the sculpted textures under display lighting.

The bright red abdominal sections provide the strongest color contrast on the figure. Those areas, combined with the compound eyes and metallic-looking surface details, should give Megaguirus a more visually active appearance than an entirely monochromatic monster.

As with any pre-production figure, the final production paint applications remain an open question. Promotional photography can make gradients and small details appear more pronounced than they are on the finished release, so collectors will want to reserve judgment until factory samples or in-hand photography become available.

Pairing Megaguirus With Hiya’s Godzilla

Hiya Toys has also announced a Godzilla vs. Megaguirus version of Godzilla for its EXQUISITE BASIC Series. That release stands approximately seven inches tall and is designed around the film’s Godzilla appearance, creating an obvious companion piece for Megaguirus.

The size difference is worth noting. Megaguirus is naturally a larger and more expansive display subject, particularly once the wings are spread, while the Godzilla figure is more compact and grounded. In practical terms, the pairing should produce a strong visual contrast: a heavy, low-slung Godzilla facing a taller, airborne opponent.

For collectors who already own Hiya’s other Godzilla 2000 figures, the new release may be less about adding another version of the character and more about completing a specific film display. The appeal is strongest for fans building a Millennium-era shelf around individual movie pairings rather than collecting only one definitive Godzilla from each period.

Price, Release Timing, and Collector Value

Hiya Toys’ direct listing gives the Megaguirus a price of $89.99, while major retailer listings have shown the figure at $107.99. That difference makes it worth checking final retailer pricing, shipping terms, and preorder policies before placing an order, particularly for international buyers.

Release estimates currently point to the fourth quarter of 2027, with some retailer listings specifying later 2027 arrival windows. As with many Hiya Toys preorders, the date should be treated as an estimate rather than a guarantee. The figure is still a considerable distance from release, and production schedules can change before final shipments begin.

At the lower direct price, the release looks relatively competitive for a character of this size with articulated wings and a dedicated display stand. At the higher retailer price, the value calculation becomes more dependent on sculpt quality, wing stability, paint execution, and how well the finished figure integrates with the companion Godzilla.

No hands-on reviews of the Megaguirus figure were available at the time of writing, so judgments about joint durability, wing tolerances, balance, and final paint quality will have to wait. For now, the prototype suggests a release with strong display potential, especially for collectors who have been waiting for more obscure Toho kaiju to receive modern articulated treatment.

Collector verdict: Hiya Toys’ Megaguirus is most likely to appeal to dedicated Godzilla collectors, Millennium-series completists, and fans who prefer dynamic action figures over static vinyl representations. Its biggest strengths are the character choice, large scale, and flight-oriented engineering. The main uncertainties are the eventual production finish, the amount of shelf space required by the wings, and whether the final price remains attractive across different retailers.
