Christopher Nolan’s films have always occupied an interesting space in collector culture. They are prestige productions with blockbuster scale, instantly recognizable visual identities, and enough franchise weight to support everything from mass-market action figures to premium statues and high-end model kits. Now that The Odyssey has opened, Nolan’s domestic opening-weekend ranking has a new entry—and its placement says a lot about how far the director’s audience reach has expanded.

The original ranking, published ahead of the film’s July 17, 2026 release, measured Nolan’s feature films solely by domestic opening weekend gross. That approach does not account for inflation, long-term box office legs, streaming performance, home-video sales, awards, or critical reputation. Still, it offers a useful snapshot of launch-day momentum, franchise power, and the kind of theatrical event that can also influence merchandising and collecting activity.

Based on the original figures, with The Odyssey added after its opening weekend, the ranking now runs from Following at the bottom to The Dark Knight Rises at the top.

The Updated Nolan Opening-Weekend Ranking

13. Following — $1,636
Nolan’s ultra-low-budget 1998 debut remains more of a cinephile discovery than a mainstream collector property. Made for approximately $6,000, the black-and-white crime thriller is important as the foundation of Nolan’s career, but its appeal is centered on film history, restoration, and auteur appreciation rather than licensed merchandise.

12. Memento — $235,488
Memento was a critical breakthrough, but its modest opening reflects its status as an adult-oriented mystery released before Nolan became a household name. For collectors, its strongest appeal is as a cult film with a distinctive identity: Polaroids, tattoos, fragmented memory, and Guy Pearce’s unforgettable central performance provide plenty of visual material, even if the property has never approached superhero-level merchandising.

11. Tenet — $9,353,090
Tenet occupies a complicated position. Its August 2020 release arrived during the COVID-19 pandemic, when theatrical attendance was severely restricted, making its opening gross difficult to compare directly with Nolan’s other films. The $205 million production was designed as a large-format spectacle, and its inversion imagery, tactical costumes, and futuristic vehicles give it obvious potential for premium collectibles. Even so, the film has not received the same broad merchandise ecosystem as Batman or Inception.

10. The Prestige — $14,801,808
The rivalry between Robert Angier and Alfred Borden produced a restrained opening for a film that has developed a strong afterlife among Nolan fans. Its turn-of-the-century magician aesthetic would translate beautifully to dioramas, prop replicas, and museum-style statues, but the film’s adult drama and comparatively subtle visual language make it a less obvious mass-market licensing candidate.

9. Insomnia — $20,930,169
Nolan’s first major studio assignment remains one of the least merchandise-friendly films in his filmography. The Alaskan setting, morally compromised detective story, and performances from Al Pacino and Robin Williams give it prestige value, but not the kind of character-driven fantasy or action iconography that typically fuels figure lines.

8. Interstellar — $47,510,360
The $165 million science-fiction epic opened strongly despite its November release and lengthy 2-hour, 49-minute runtime. Its collector appeal is easy to understand: Endurance spacecraft designs, NASA-inspired equipment, space suits, robots, and cosmic imagery offer a rich visual vocabulary for model kits and display pieces. While it is not a traditional action-figure franchise, Interstellar has the kind of enduring design language that supports premium-format collectibles.

7. Batman Begins — $48,745,440
The first chapter of Nolan’s Batman trilogy launched below the later films but established the grounded superhero aesthetic that would define an entire generation of collectibles. The tactical Batsuit, Tumbler, Batpod, League of Shadows costumes, and Wayne Manor setting provide substantially more display potential than the opening weekend alone would suggest. For collectors, Batman Begins is also notable because many later releases continue to be judged against its realistic, militarized approach to the character.

6. Dunkirk — $50,513,488
Dunkirk earned $50.5 million domestically during its opening weekend, an impressive result for a compact war film with a 1-hour, 46-minute runtime and no conventional superhero or science-fiction hook. Its collectibles appeal is concentrated in vehicles, aircraft, naval craft, and historical dioramas rather than character figures. For model builders, however, the film’s period detail and practical production design make it particularly attractive.

5. Inception — $62,785,337
Inception remains one of Nolan’s strongest original launches. The film’s folding cityscapes, dream architecture, sleek suits, snow fortress, and rotating hallway sequence created a visual identity that is immediately recognizable on a collector’s shelf. It also occupies a valuable middle ground: accessible enough for casual fans, but conceptually dense enough to sustain premium statues and elaborate display environments.

4. Oppenheimer — $82,455,420
The $100 million biographical drama became one of Nolan’s most commercially significant non-franchise releases. Its $82.4 million opening was especially notable for an R-rated, three-hour historical drama built around dialogue, scientific debate, and moral consequence rather than conventional action. From a collecting perspective, Oppenheimer demonstrates that a filmmaker’s brand can become powerful enough to drive theatrical demand even when the subject matter is not traditionally associated with toys or statues.

3. The Odyssey — $124,500,000
Opening on July 17, 2026, The Odyssey debuted to an estimated $124.5 million domestically and approximately $264.1 million worldwide. That places it above Oppenheimer and below only the two concluding films of Nolan’s Batman trilogy in domestic opening-weekend performance.

The result is important beyond the numbers. The Odyssey is an original interpretation of ancient mythology rather than a pre-existing comic-book property, yet it launched as a major premium-format event. Its mythic characters, armor, ships, monsters, and battlefield imagery also give the film a natural advantage in the collectibles space. Whether that translates into a deep licensing program remains a separate question, but the theatrical performance makes the property far more visible to manufacturers and collectors alike.

2. The Dark Knight — $158,411,483
The Dark Knight remains one of the defining examples of a franchise sequel becoming a cultural event. Its opening-weekend figure reflects Batman’s built-in audience, the success of Batman Begins, and extraordinary anticipation surrounding Heath Ledger’s Joker. For collectors, the film has become a benchmark release: the Joker, Batman, Two-Face, police uniforms, vehicles, and architectural environments have all supported years of figure, statue, bust, and prop-replica releases.

1. The Dark Knight Rises — $160,887,295
The trilogy finale narrowly leads Nolan’s domestic opening ranking with $160.9 million. Its collector footprint is similarly broad, offering multiple versions of Batman, Bane, Catwoman, the Bat, the Batpod, and a host of supporting characters and vehicles. While fans may debate which film is strongest, the box office confirms that The Dark Knight Rises benefited from the full momentum of Nolan’s Batman era.

What the Numbers Mean for Collectors

Opening weekend success does not automatically determine whether a film deserves a place in a collection. Tenet, The Prestige, and Interstellar all have passionate followings despite lacking the commercial machinery of Batman. In many cases, lower-volume properties can be more appealing to dedicated collectors because a well-chosen statue or display piece feels less interchangeable than another mass-market superhero release.

At the same time, box office momentum matters. Strong theatrical launches can encourage studios and license holders to pursue more figures, vehicles, prop replicas, and premium-format releases. That is especially relevant for The Odyssey, whose mythology-driven design could appeal to statue collectors, historical model builders, fantasy fans, and Nolan completists at the same time.

Objectively, The Dark Knight Rises remains the domestic opening-weekend champion, with The Dark Knight close behind. Subjectively, collectors may place Inception, Interstellar, or even Tenet higher because their visual concepts offer more unusual display possibilities. That is the advantage of Nolan’s filmography: the box office tells one story, while the shelf tells another.

Collector Verdict

Casual fans will likely gravitate toward the Batman trilogy and the instantly recognizable imagery of Inception. Dedicated collectors and model builders may find greater long-term appeal in Interstellar, Dunkirk, Tenet, and The Odyssey, where vehicles, costumes, environments, and large-scale world-building create stronger opportunities for distinctive displays.

The opening-weekend chart measures commercial impact, not artistic value. But with The Odyssey now debuting as Nolan’s third-biggest domestic opener, it also suggests that the director’s name alone has become a collecting category—one capable of turning even an unconventional film into a major event.
