Jaadugar: A Witch in Mongolia has revealed another major addition to its voice cast. The anime’s third promotional video introduces Kujira as Boraqchin, Ögedei’s first wife and Empress, adding a quietly formidable presence to the historical drama’s increasingly complex royal court.
Boraqchin is one of the most important figures in the Mongolian section of Tomato Soup’s manga, known in English as A Witch’s Life in Mongol. The new video shifts the spotlight toward the imperial household and previews the political maneuvering that will shape Sitara’s next chapter.
For longtime fans of the manga, Kujira’s casting is especially fitting. The veteran voice actor has said she was already reading the original series before being offered the part, and described Boraqchin as a calm, strategic character whose true intentions remain difficult to read.
Kujira joins a growing cast of royal players
On the anime’s official character page, Boraqchin is described as Ögedei’s first wife and the Great Khatun. While she presents herself with dignity and composure, she is also deeply concerned about the future of the empire and the balance of power within it. Her preferred method is to influence events from behind the scenes rather than openly claim the spotlight.
That places her in direct opposition to the story’s central alliance. Sitara, also known as Fatima, is a Persian girl who survives the Mongol invasion after losing her home and everyone she loves. She eventually enters the Mongol court and becomes connected to Töregene, Ögedei’s sixth wife, a woman carrying her own anger toward the empire.
The series’ existing cast includes Akira Sekine as Sitara, Ami Koshimizu as Töregene, Houko Kuwashima as Fatima, Jun Saito as Muhammad, Hiro Shimono as Ögedei, Ryota Suzuki as Tolui, Miyu Irino as Shira, and Daisuke Namikawa as Chagatai. Kenji Nojima voices Jochi, while Misaki Kuno, Ayaka Asai, and Mayumi Shintani play Sorghaghtani, Möge, and Kirgistani, respectively.
A historical drama built around knowledge and power
A Witch’s Life in Mongol takes place in the thirteenth century, when the Mongol Empire is expanding across Asia. Sitara begins her story in the Persian city of Tus, where she is taken in by Fatima, a woman from a scholarly family. Through Fatima and her son Muhammad, Sitara learns to value education and scientific knowledge.
Her life changes when the Mongol army reaches her homeland. After being separated from everything familiar, Sitara enters a world where information can be as valuable as military strength. Her intelligence gives her a path forward, but it also draws her into the dangerous rivalries of the imperial court.
That premise gives Boraqchin an important role in the anime’s larger conflict. She is not simply another member of Ögedei’s household; she represents the kind of political intelligence that can operate without armies or public declarations. The new promotional video’s emphasis on the imperial consorts suggests that the anime is preparing to explore several competing visions for the empire’s future.
Science SARU’s anime is now streaming
Naoko Yamada, known for The Heike Story, A Silent Voice, and The Colors Within, serves as chief director, with Abel Góngora directing at Science SARU. Kenichi Yoshida handles character design and serves as animation chief, while Kanichi Katō oversees the series scripts and Kōshirō Hino composes the music.
The anime premiered in Japan on July 4, 2026, with its first two episodes broadcast together as a one-hour special in TV Asahi’s IMAnimation W programming block. Crunchyroll is streaming the series as it airs, and the platform began releasing the English dub with its first two episodes on July 18.
Music is also playing a major part in the adaptation. SEKAI NO OWARI performs the opening theme “Stella,” while Queen Bee contributes the ending theme “Hoshi,” meaning “Star.” The songs complement a series that balances intimate character drama with the vast scale of Mongolian and Persian history.
The manga launched on Akita Shoten’s Souffle website in September 2021 and later began simultaneous publication in Mystery Bonita. Its reputation has continued to grow, including a top ranking in the female-reader category of Kono Manga ga Sugoi!, nominations for the Manga Taisho Awards, and the grand prize in the Comic division of the 55th Japan Cartoonists Association Awards.
With Boraqchin now fully cast, the next episodes are worth keeping an eye on for the developing battle of wits between Sitara, Töregene, and the Empress. Kujira’s arrival adds another layer to a court where knowledge, patience, and carefully chosen alliances may prove more dangerous than open force.
