Former GTA 5 Developer Expects GTA 6 to Be Rockstar’s Biggest Game Yet

A former Rockstar Games producer believes Grand Theft Auto 6 could be the biggest and most detailed entry in the series yet — and his reaction is less excitement than relief that he does not have to help finish it. John Ricchio, who worked on Grand Theft Auto 5, Red Dead Redemption, and Max Payne 3, says Rockstar’s habit of expanding each new open-world project makes GTA 6’s eventual scale difficult to imagine.

“I can only imagine the size of GTA 6,” Ricchio said during an interview with Kiwi Talkz. “It must be monstrous. Or if not monstrous, it’s probably way more detailed.” With Rockstar’s next crime epic scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026, his comments offer an interesting look at the expectations surrounding the most anticipated game in the company’s history.

Rockstar’s open worlds keep getting larger

Ricchio’s prediction is based on a clear pattern across Rockstar’s major releases. He described Grand Theft Auto 5 as “significantly bigger” than Grand Theft Auto 4, while also pointing to the growth seen between earlier Grand Theft Auto titles and Red Dead Redemption. For Rockstar, the next game has rarely been a simple continuation. It has usually been an attempt to make the world broader, denser, and more reactive.

That growth is not only measured by map size. Rockstar’s strongest open worlds are defined by how much activity, atmosphere, and environmental detail they can support. A larger city or countryside matters, but so does the number of systems operating within it: traffic, pedestrians, interiors, wildlife, weather, side activities, missions, and the countless small interactions that make a location feel inhabited.

That is why Ricchio leaves room for GTA 6 to be “way more detailed” rather than merely larger. A game can expand horizontally with a wider map, or it can become more ambitious vertically by making its existing spaces feel more alive. For players, the second approach may ultimately matter more than another increase in square mileage.

GTA 6 is officially returning to Vice City

Rockstar has confirmed that Grand Theft Auto 6 will take players back to Vice City and across the wider state of Leonida. The story follows Jason Duval and Lucia, two criminals whose plans go wrong and pull them into a broader conspiracy. Rockstar has also confirmed PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions, with the game currently set for release on November 19, 2026.

The official material already points toward a setting with more than one urban environment. Vice City remains the central attraction, but the surrounding state gives Rockstar room to explore beaches, rural areas, highways, small communities, and other contrasting locations. That larger geographic structure could provide the kind of scale Ricchio is imagining, although Rockstar has not publicly detailed the full size of the map or every location players will visit.

It is important to separate what is confirmed from what is speculation. Rockstar has shown the setting, protagonists, and broad premise, but it has not announced every gameplay system, the full scope of the world, or whether the final game will include additional areas beyond those already shown. Claims about specific features, map dimensions, or unannounced modes should therefore be treated cautiously.

The hidden cost of a bigger Rockstar game

Ricchio’s comments are also notable because they are not simply another piece of hype. He acknowledged that working on a Rockstar blockbuster can be an extremely demanding period in a developer’s career. “I’m pretty happy that I’m not on GTA 6,” he said, while making clear that he still values his time with the studio and the people who create these games.

That perspective gives the idea of a “monstrous” GTA 6 a second meaning. A larger and more detailed game does not appear by accident. Every additional animation, activity, mission branch, environmental reaction, and character interaction requires planning, testing, iteration, and coordination between teams. As a project grows, even small changes can create consequences across production.

Rockstar’s games have often been praised for their polish and sense of place, but that ambition comes with a difficult development burden. The more convincing the world needs to be, the more work is required to ensure that its separate parts maintain a consistent level of quality. GTA 6’s challenge will not simply be building a large map; it will be making that map feel deliberate rather than empty.

Why “more detailed” may be the real evolution

For players, the most exciting possibility is not necessarily a world that takes longer to cross. It is a world that rewards closer attention. The best Rockstar environments encourage players to stop following the main story and investigate what is happening around them. A shop window, a passing conversation, a strange roadside incident, or an unexpected encounter can make the world feel like more than a collection of mission locations.

GTA 6 will also face a higher technical bar than its predecessors. The game is being developed for current-generation consoles rather than older hardware, giving Rockstar more room to pursue visual fidelity and simulation detail. That does not guarantee a flawless launch or confirm specific performance targets, but it does help explain why expectations have become so extreme after the long wait since Grand Theft Auto 5.

There is a danger in allowing “bigger” to become the only measure of ambition. A huge map can lose its impact if it is filled with repetitive activities or long stretches that offer little meaningful interaction. Rockstar’s real test will be balancing scale with density, pacing, character writing, and the kind of memorable detail that made its earlier open worlds so influential.

Rockstar’s next benchmark

Ricchio’s comments do not reveal new gameplay features or confirm any unannounced aspect of GTA 6. What they do provide is a useful reminder of the enormous production challenge facing Rockstar. The studio has built a reputation for making each major open-world release more ambitious than the last, and the pressure surrounding GTA 6 is now greater than ever.

Whether the sequel becomes “monstrous” through its map, its systems, its detail, or all three, players will be looking for more than raw size. They will want a world that feels purposeful, populated, and capable of surprising them long after the opening hours. If Rockstar can deliver that balance, GTA 6 may not just be a larger Grand Theft Auto game — it could establish a new standard for open-world design once again.
