Double Fine is honoring Tim Curry’s legacy with a fittingly metal tribute: Brütal Legend was made available free on itch.io for a limited 666-minute window following the actor’s death at age 80. Curry’s work in games was only one part of a career that included The Rocky Horror Picture Show, It, Clue, television roles, and a long list of stage performances, but his contribution to Double Fine’s heavy-metal adventure remains one of his most entertaining villain roles. The giveaway was announced on August 26, 2026, and was structured around the number 666, giving players just over 11 hours to claim the game. According to the promotion details, anyone who claimed it during the window could download it later, although the standard itch.io listing has since returned to its usual paid format. A fitting tribute to the Emperor of the Tainted Coil

Curry voices Doviculus, the grotesque ruler of the Tainted Coil and the primary antagonist of Brütal Legend. The character is an exaggerated, Cenobite-inspired demon emperor whose theatrical menace makes him an ideal match for Curry’s distinctive voice and flair for playing larger-than-life villains.

The role nearly went in a different direction. Double Fine creative director Tim Schafer previously explained that heavy-metal icon Ronnie James Dio had originally been considered for Doviculus, but Curry ultimately won the part because his voice better suited the character’s combination of intimidation, theatricality, and strange sensuality. Schafer recalled that Curry immediately understood the joke behind the role and responded enthusiastically to the material. (PC Gamer)

That casting choice feels especially appropriate in retrospect. Brütal Legend is built around the collision of rock mythology, fantasy spectacle, and comedy, and Curry had spent decades occupying that same space between sinister and absurd. His Doviculus performance gives the villain a vocal identity that is unmistakably his own, rather than simply functioning as another celebrity cameo.

Why Brütal Legend still stands apart

Released in 2009, Brütal Legend is an action-adventure game that mixes open-world exploration, vehicle traversal, melee combat, and real-time strategy systems. Players control Eddie Riggs, a legendary roadie voiced by Jack Black, as he battles demonic forces in a world inspired by heavy-metal album art and rock folklore. Double Fine’s own description emphasizes the unusual blend of action and strategy, including guitar solos that can summon objects, strengthen allies, or interfere with enemies. (Double Fine)

The game’s identity is inseparable from its music and cast. Its soundtrack spans 108 songs from 75 bands, while the voice and cameo roster includes figures such as Lemmy Kilmister, Rob Halford, Lita Ford, Ozzy Osbourne, and many other artists from metal’s history. That combination gives the game an atmosphere few other releases have attempted, even when its individual systems do not always fit together cleanly. (Double Fine)

For players who enjoy strategy games, the most distinctive element is the stage-battle structure. Battles expand beyond direct combat as Eddie commands units and manages larger confrontations, creating a hybrid that feels more experimental than polished. It is a major reason the game remains memorable, but also one of the reasons its campaign can feel uneven compared with its more straightforward action sections.

Critics praised the ambition, with reservations

Contemporary reviews generally agreed that Brütal Legend was a bold and unusually stylish project. GameSpot awarded it an 8.5 and praised its characters, visual design, soundtrack, and multiplayer stage battles. The review also highlighted some recurring weaknesses: repetitive side missions, a short single-player campaign, and occasional frame-rate problems during driving sequences and crowded battles. (GameSpot)

Broader critical reception was favorable rather than unanimous. The PC version holds a Metacritic score of 80, with most listed reviews positive and a smaller group mixed, reflecting the game’s split personality. Reviewers often admired its world-building, humor, music, and willingness to combine genres, while expressing reservations about pacing and the balance between its action and strategy mechanics. (Metacritic)

That unevenness is part of the game’s lasting appeal. Brütal Legend is not a perfectly streamlined action game or a fully developed real-time strategy title. Instead, it is a high-concept experiment held together by personality, presentation, and a world that remains difficult to confuse with anything else. For some players, the genre shifts are a liability; for others, they are exactly what makes Double Fine’s project worth revisiting.

What players should know about the itch.io version

The itch.io edition supports Windows, macOS, and Linux, with keyboard, mouse, Xbox controller, and other gamepad support listed on the store page. The PC release also includes the Hammer of Infinite Fate and Tears of the Hextadon multiplayer map packs as free bonuses. (Double Fine)

There is one important caveat for anyone picking it up outside Steam: online and multiplayer features are not available through the itch.io version. That makes the edition best suited to players interested in the campaign, exploration, soundtrack, and the unusual single-player mix of action and strategy. Steam remains the relevant option for those specifically looking to play its multiplayer content. (Double Fine)

Double Fine previously used the same 666-minute giveaway concept to commemorate Ozzy Osbourne, who appears in Brütal Legend as the Guardian of Metal shopkeeper. Repeating the idea for Curry creates a neat bookend for two performers whose presence helped define the game’s heavy-metal personality. (PC Gamer)

Even if the latest giveaway window has already closed, the tribute serves as a useful reminder of why Brütal Legend continues to attract curiosity. It is a flawed but singular game, packed with metal history, surreal humor, memorable performances, and the kind of creative excess that modern blockbuster design rarely permits. Curry’s Doviculus is only one part of that legacy, but it is a particularly fitting one: theatrical, dangerous, funny, and impossible to mistake for anyone else.
