Jennifer English is stepping away from her role as Gwendolyn, the protagonist of Eclipse Glow Games’ upcoming fantasy action-adventure Tides of Annihilation, citing personal health reasons. The actor will remain involved as an advisor, but another performer will take over the English voice role—making the upcoming Gamescom demo the first major public look at Gwendolyn’s recast performance.
English confirmed the change while explaining that she has recently needed to “slow down and reassess” her commitments. She said the decision followed careful consideration of her mental and physical health, adding that she remains grateful to have been part of Tides of Annihilation since its inception.
A high-profile voice exits, but remains part of the project
English has become one of the most recognizable performers in modern RPGs. Her credits include Shadowheart in Baldur’s Gate 3, Maelle in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, and Latenna in Elden Ring. That track record made her casting as Gwendolyn one of the more immediately notable elements of Tides of Annihilation before the game even had a release date.
Eclipse Glow Games says English will continue supporting the project in an advisory capacity. According to the developer, she also helped identify potential replacements alongside other members of the voice cast. The studio has not yet revealed the new actor’s identity, but says players will hear the performance during the game’s upcoming demo and in selected official updates.
The transition appears to be taking place with English’s support rather than as a sudden break between actor and developer. That distinction matters for a story-driven game whose protagonist is expected to carry much of the emotional weight. A recast can change how audiences interpret a character, but English’s continued advisory role could help preserve the tone and characterization established during the project’s early development.
Why Tides of Annihilation has attracted attention
Tides of Annihilation is being developed as a single-player fantasy action-adventure inspired by Arthurian legend. Its setting combines a shattered version of modern London with a medieval fantasy realm, placing Gwendolyn in a world shaped by supernatural invasion, ruined landmarks, and spectral knights.
The game’s central combat concept involves fighting alongside summoned Arthurian knights, each built around different combat roles. The official presentation has emphasized fast-paced battles, strategic knight selection, and the contrast between Gwendolyn’s movement and the abilities of her spectral allies.
That premise has helped the project stand out in an increasingly crowded action-game market. Its visual identity sits somewhere between dark fantasy, contemporary urban ruins, and large-scale spectacle, while its combat ambitions have invited comparisons to character-action games and cinematic console adventures. Those comparisons remain provisional, however, since the game has not yet been released and has not received a completed critical review.
Gamescom will reveal the next version of Gwendolyn
Tides of Annihilation is scheduled to receive its first playable public showing at Gamescom 2026, which runs from August 26 through August 30 in Cologne, Germany. A new trailer is also set to debut during Gamescom Opening Night Live on August 25.
The Gamescom demo is expected to offer branching paths with different exploration and combat experiences, along with key environments and large-scale set pieces. It will also serve as the first substantial opportunity for players to hear the new English voice of Gwendolyn in context.
That timing gives Eclipse Glow Games a useful opportunity to introduce the replacement performer as part of a broader showcase rather than as an isolated casting announcement. For audiences already familiar with English’s work, the performance will inevitably be scrutinized. The new actor will need to establish a distinct interpretation while retaining enough continuity to make Gwendolyn feel like the same character shown in earlier material.
No release date has been announced yet
The casting change does not appear to have altered the game’s announced platforms. Tides of Annihilation remains in development for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, with the PC version planned for Steam and the Epic Games Store. Xbox’s listing also identifies the project as a single-player title.
There is still no confirmed release date or release window from Eclipse Glow Games. The Gamescom demo should provide a clearer indication of the project’s current state, but it would be premature to treat the event as a signal that launch is imminent.
For now, the most important update is a personal one: English is taking time away from a demanding project to focus on her health, while still offering creative support behind the scenes. Fans will have to wait until the Gamescom reveal to learn who inherits the role—and whether the new performance can make Gwendolyn’s next chapter feel familiar without simply imitating what came before.
