Pokémon Card Stores in Japan Will Require Facial Recognition to Combat Scalpers

Buying Pokémon cards in Japan may soon require something far more personal than a shopping bag. The Pokémon Company is introducing facial recognition at its official Pokémon Card Store locations, with the system designed to stop scalpers from entering multiple times or collecting more than one entry ticket in a single day.

The measure applies to customers from elementary-school age upward and will be mandatory for entry. Preschool children are exempt from the scan, but they must enter with a guardian. For collectors who have become accustomed to racing through queues for new expansions, the policy marks a significant escalation in the battle against resale abuse.

One Entry Per Person, Per Day

Under the new rules, customers can enter a Pokémon Card Store once per day and receive only one numbered entry ticket. If the system detects that the same person has entered more than once or attempted to obtain multiple tickets, the customer can be refused entry based on the system’s judgment.

The policy also covers customers who agree to the store’s entry and ticketing rules but later leave without completing a purchase. The official guidance warns that shoppers who leave without speaking to staff may not be allowed to re-enter, while even a temporary exit for something as ordinary as using the restroom requires staff confirmation.

The Pokémon Company says it will collect facial image data and visit counts for the purpose of managing access, preventing abuse, and maintaining store security. The company also states that the information will be securely managed and deleted after a certain period, although the exact retention period is not specified in the announcement.

A Targeted Response to a Persistent Problem

Scalping has become one of the most frustrating parts of the Pokémon Trading Card Game’s modern boom. When highly anticipated products arrive, resellers can overwhelm stores at opening time, buying as much stock as possible before ordinary players and collectors get a chance.

The problem is not limited to online marketplaces. In physical stores, resale groups can exploit purchase limits by sending multiple people into queues, repeatedly re-entering locations, or collecting several tickets under different arrangements. A facial recognition system gives retailers a way to track those repeat visits without relying entirely on staff to recognize individual customers.

That does not mean the system will eliminate scalping. Resellers could still use other people to purchase products, and the technology may create false positives or make legitimate group visits more complicated. Families, friends, and collectors traveling together could face extra scrutiny if staff believe they are attempting to bypass the rules.

Why Pokémon Is Taking This Step Now

The pressure surrounding Pokémon cards has extended beyond inconvenient queues. The supplied report points to a rise in thefts targeting collectible stores, including a January robbery in which armed thieves reportedly stole more than $100,000 worth of merchandise from a newly opened Pokémon store.

There has also been public chaos around limited promotional products. The release of the Pikachu with Grey Felt Hat card connected to the Van Gogh Museum promotion in Amsterdam became a particularly visible example, after scalpers rushed to secure the limited item and disrupted what was supposed to be a crossover celebration.

Those incidents help explain why the policy is being framed not only as an anti-scalping measure, but also as a safety and security measure. The Pokémon Company is attempting to make its official stores more predictable for ordinary customers, even if that means adding a layer of surveillance that many shoppers may find uncomfortable.

Japan Is Becoming a Testing Ground for Stricter Authentication

For now, the facial recognition requirement is limited to official Pokémon Card Store locations in Japan. These are smaller, Pokémon Trading Card Game-focused retail spaces and should not be confused with every Pokémon Center or general retailer that sells cards.

However, the facial scanning system is part of a broader shift toward stronger identity checks around Pokémon card products and events. The Pokémon Company has also announced that it is considering a My Number Card-based identity verification system for selected online product sales, lotteries, and official events in Japan, with implementation being considered from around August 2026. That proposal would authenticate users through the card’s electronic certificates rather than require the company to store the individual’s My Number itself.

There is no confirmation that facial recognition will expand to Pokémon Center stores or international markets. It is also too early to say whether the system will become a model for other trading card companies. Still, Pokémon’s approach could influence the wider hobby if retailers decide that traditional purchase limits and first-come, first-served queues are no longer enough.

Fairer Access or Too High a Price?

From a collector’s perspective, the appeal is obvious: a system that stops repeat entries could give more people a realistic chance of buying products at retail price. It may also reduce the frantic atmosphere that has made major releases stressful for casual fans and competitive players alike.

The trade-off is privacy. Customers will have to surrender facial image data simply to enter a card shop, and anyone unwilling to accept that condition will be denied entry. Even with promises of secure storage and eventual deletion, facial recognition remains a more intrusive requirement than showing a ticket, scanning a barcode, or accepting a per-customer purchase limit.

Pokémon’s move reflects how dramatically the trading card market has changed. What was once a hobby built around opening packs, trading duplicates, and playing matches now sits at the intersection of collectibles, retail security, and speculative resale. If facial scans become the price of accessing limited Pokémon products, the real question may be whether the system restores fairness—or simply shows how far the hobby has been pushed by scalpers.
