Final Fantasy XIV’s Dawntrail relic weapon questline is complete, and Patch 7.55 delivers the final Phantom upgrades: the item level 790 Phantom Eclipticum and the item level 795 Phantom Occultum. If you want Dawntrail’s long-term weapon chase, prepare for a journey through the Occult Crescent, duty roulettes, crafting materials, tomestones, FATEs, and a healthy amount of repetition.

The good news is that the grind is spread across several patches, and many of the later requirements only need to be completed once. Once you have finished an upgrade stage for one job, additional weapons become considerably easier to obtain.

Before You Start the Phantom Relic Questline

You must complete the Dawntrail main scenario quest and unlock the Occult Crescent. Begin the field-operation questline with “One Last Hurrah” in Tulliyollal, then continue until you complete “Unfamiliar Territory.” You will eventually use the Phantom Village as your main relic hub.

The Phantom weapon quests are job-specific. When you accept one of the major weapon quests, make sure you are playing the job you want to receive the weapon for. The official quest requirements also confirm that Phantom weapons are built through successive enhancement stages, with later weapons available through Dodokkuli once the relevant progression has been completed.

Step One: Create the Phantom Penumbrae

Speak with Lydirceil in the Phantom Village and accept “Arcane Artistry.” This begins the first relic stage, which produces an item level 745 Phantom Penumbrae weapon.

You need three of each of the six demiatma types, for a total of 18 demiatma. They can drop from FATEs and Critical Encounters in the Occult Crescent, or from FATEs in Dawntrail’s main-world zones. The drop rate is deliberately low, so expect to complete several encounters for each successful drop rather than receiving one every time.

Demiatma Occult Crescent Areas and Encounters Dawntrail Zone
Azurite Southeastern area; Crawling Death, Scourge of the Mind, The Unbridled, A Prying Eye, The Golden Guardian, Rough Waters Urqopacha
Verdigris Southwestern area; Calamity Bound, A Delicate Balance, Pleading Pots, Sworn to Soil Kozama’uka
Malachite Central western area; Flame of Dusk, Trial by Claw, From Times Bygone, An Unending Duty Yak T’el
Realgar Northwestern area; Shark Attack, With Extreme Prejudice, Cursed Concern, The Winged Terror, Brain Drain Shaaloani
Caput Mortuum Eastern ruins area; Company of Stone, On the Hunt, Eternal Watch, Serving Darkness Heritage Found
Orpiment Northeast and central areas; Noise Complaint, The Black Regiment, Persistent Pots, King of the Crescent, Fatal Allure Living Memory

After collecting the demiatma, turn them in to Gerolt and accept “Forging the Phantasmal” as your chosen job. Buy three Arcanite from Ermina for 500 Allagan Tomestones of Heliometry each, then give them to Dodokkuli. The total cost is 1,500 tomestones.

For additional Penumbrae weapons, you do not need to repeat the demiatma grind. Buy three more Arcanite and exchange them directly with Dodokkuli.

Step Two: Upgrade to Phantom Umbrae

The Phantom Umbrae is the item level 760 version and adds a glowing effect. Begin “Keeping the Old Ways Alive” with Lydirceil, then provide Gerolt with five materials: Rroneek glue, Ut’ohmu siderite, and Synthetic Dark Matter Alpha, Beta, and Gamma.

Rroneek glue costs 300,000 gil from Goplu in Tuliyollal, while Ut’ohmu siderite costs 600 bicolor gemstones from Rral Wuruq in Yak T’el. The three Synthetic Dark Matter materials require high-level crafting and gathering resources, although they can also be purchased from the Market Board.

Next comes the main time sink: the Aetherwell Array. You must fill four aetherwells tied to high-level dungeon, trial, alliance raid, and normal raid roulettes. Each requires 10,000 aether. Daily roulette bonuses make the process much faster, but players completing only their daily runs should expect this to take roughly two weeks.

Once the array is full, finish “Wrought by Hands Phantasmal,” buy three Waxing Arcanite from Ermina for another 1,500 Allagan Tomestones of Heliometry, and turn them in to complete the upgrade. The Aetherwell requirement is only needed once; future Umbrae weapons require the tomestone materials but not another full array.

Steps Three and Four: Phantom Obscurum and Eclipticum

The item level 775 Phantom Obscurum arrives through the “Timeworn Techniques” quest. You will need Umbral Clay, three crafted or market-board materials, and 1,200 Crystal Paste. The paste is delivered in four batches of 100, 200, 300, and 600.

Crystal Paste comes from a broad selection of content, including Dawntrail FATEs, Occult Crescent Critical Engagements, duty roulettes, Pilgrim’s Traverse, The Final Verse (Quantum), AAC Heavyweight raids, and Hell on Rails (Extreme). The most efficient option depends on your group, queue times, and tolerance for repetition. Normal AAC Heavyweight raids provide eight paste per clear, while Dawntrail FATEs provide three and Hell on Rails (Extreme) provides nine.

After completing “A Phantom Reborn,” Patch 7.55 opens the final weapon upgrades. Start “Under No Illusion,” collect the Monarch Whetstone and three crafted materials, then begin “Phantoms to Fillet.” You must collect 100 of each Phantom Dispeller type from North Horn Critical Engagements, North Horn FATEs, or selected roulettes.

Dispeller North Horn Critical Encounters Roulette Source
Phantom Dispeller α Forbidden Folios, Ahead of the Competition, Appalling Behavior, Web of Terror High-level dungeon roulette
Phantom Dispeller β Imbalanced Diet, Dark Artistry, Tiny Terror, Quarried Away, Cursed Resurgence Trials roulette
Phantom Dispeller γ Familiar Tactics, Accept No Imitators, Lost on the Wind, A Beast Unleashed, Doubled Trouble Normal raid roulette

Each relevant Critical Encounter awards 10 dispellers, while the listed FATEs award three. High-level dungeon roulettes provide 13 of the alpha type, while trials and normal raids provide five beta or gamma dispellers respectively.

The Final Phantom Occultum Upgrade

The Phantom Occultum is the final stage, reaching item level 795 and allowing you to set the weapon’s attributes. Accept “Final Phantasm” from Lydirceil, then use the knowledge crystal in your Key Items inventory to see the required Dawntrail duties, FATEs, and marked monsters.

Unlike the earlier paste and dispeller stages, this is a checklist rather than a quantity-based grind. Complete every listed task once, return the filled knowledge crystal to Gerolt, and the weapon is yours. Official Patch 7.55 notes describe this as the maximum-strength enhancement stage and confirm that the final weapon allows attribute selection.

For additional jobs, the process is much less punishing. After completing the required progression for one weapon, later weapons can be purchased and enhanced through Dodokkuli using Ecliptic Arcanite and the appropriate tomestone currency. You also do not need to repeat the major material collections or the knowledge crystal checklist for every job.

The Phantom relic series is a classic FFXIV endurance project: not especially difficult in one sitting, but demanding when viewed as a complete chain. The smartest approach is to combine daily roulettes with your normal raid schedule, use Occult Crescent FATEs and Critical Encounters whenever they are active, and avoid treating the entire weapon as a race. The final glow is the reward, but the real advantage is that Dawntrail’s relic grind lets you make progress through nearly every type of endgame content.
