The Moon on a Rainy Night is officially headed to television in 2027, giving Kuzushiro’s acclaimed Japanese manga a new route to international audiences. REMOW announced the timeframe during its Anime NYC panel on Saturday, August 22, while the adaptation continues production at CompTown.

For webtoon and manhwa readers who enjoy emotionally grounded romance, the project stands out for placing communication, accessibility, and trust at the center of its love story. It is not a webtoon or manhwa, but a Japanese manga serialized through Kodansha’s Comic Days platform, and its quiet, character-driven premise has clear appeal beyond the traditional manga market.

A Chance Meeting Becomes Something More

The story begins on a rainy night, when high school student Saki is hurrying to a piano lesson. She collides with a striking long-haired girl, scattering her sheet music in the process. The mysterious girl returns the pages without saying a word, leaving Saki with little more than a brief encounter to remember.

The next morning, Saki discovers that the stranger is her new classmate. Her name is Kanon, and she is very hard of hearing. Kanon relies on proximity and lip-reading to communicate, but her guarded personality often creates distance between herself and the people around her.

One small act of kindness gives Saki a way past Kanon’s defenses. As the two spend more time together, their relationship gradually shifts from curiosity and uncertainty toward a deeper emotional connection. The official anime synopsis frames the series as a story about two girls whose everyday interactions slowly bring their hearts closer together.

That setup gives The Moon on a Rainy Night a more intimate focus than a romance built around dramatic misunderstandings or oversized love triangles. Its central tension comes from the difficulty of being understood—and from the assumptions other people make when they do not take the time to listen.

Confirmed Anime Staff

Tomoe Makino is directing the television anime at CompTown. Makino’s previous credits include Aharen-san wa Hakarenai, A Tale of the Secret Saint, and Woodpecker Detective’s Office.

Shōgo Yasukawa is handling series composition and overseeing the scripts. His credits include Food Wars! Shokugeki no Soma, Mitsuboshi Colors, and Rock is a Lady’s Modesty. Ayumi Nishibata, who worked on Otherside Picnic and Migi & Dali, is designing the anime’s characters.

The official Japanese website identifies the series as Amayo no Tsuki, the original title of Kuzushiro’s manga. It also confirms Kuzushiro as the original creator, CompTown as the animation studio, and the same core staff announced by REMOW.

The anime was first announced before the 2027 timeframe was reported. Kodansha previously confirmed that the manga would receive a worldwide-streaming anime adaptation, but no exact premiere date or streaming service has been announced in the available information. For now, “coming 2027” is the confirmed release window.

Why the Adaptation Matters

Kanon’s hearing loss is not simply a character trait designed to create a romantic obstacle. It shapes how she navigates classrooms, friendships, and casual conversation, while also influencing the pace and texture of her connection with Saki. The premise gives the series an opportunity to explore intimacy through gestures, physical positioning, patience, and the gradual development of mutual understanding.

That emotional approach could translate especially well to animation if the production preserves the manga’s attention to silence and small changes in expression. Conversations involving lip-reading may require careful staging, while piano lessons and rainy-night encounters offer natural opportunities for sound design to become part of the storytelling rather than mere background decoration.

This is editorially where the adaptation becomes most interesting. A weekly anime cannot reproduce every pause or panel transition from the manga, but it can use timing, framing, ambient noise, and performance to show what communication feels like from Kanon’s perspective. Whether the series takes that opportunity will be one of its defining creative challenges.

Where the Manga Stands

Kuzushiro debuted The Moon on a Rainy Night on Kodansha’s Comic Days website in June 2021. Kodansha published the manga’s 12th Japanese volume on June 19, while Kodansha USA has released the eighth volume digitally in English.

The series also comes from a creator with experience moving between distinct tones and genres. Kuzushiro’s other works include A Mangaka’s Weirdly Wonderful Workplace and Inugami-san to Nekoyama-san, but The Moon on a Rainy Night uses a notably reflective setup built around a relationship that develops through ordinary school life.

For readers discovering the title because of the anime announcement, the manga offers the fullest available version of Saki and Kanon’s story before the adaptation arrives. The anime’s 2027 window also gives new readers time to explore the source material without the immediate pressure of catching up before a near-term premiere.

No episode count, exact broadcast season, cast announcement, or international streaming platform has been confirmed yet. What is clear is that The Moon on a Rainy Night is moving forward as a television anime, with its central relationship and carefully observed emotional storytelling positioned as the project’s main draw.
