Penguin Random House is expanding the 2026 free-comics tradition with Comics Giveaway Day, a new event scheduled for Saturday, May 2, 2026—the same day as Free Comic Book Day. Its lineup brings together webtoon graphic novels, manga previews, licensed favorites, fantasy adventures, horror samplers, and several attractive jumping-on points for new readers.

For digital-comics fans, the most notable entries come from WEBTOON Unscrolled and Kodansha Comics. IDW Publishing is also offering reissued first issues of Locke & Key and Sonic the Hedgehog, making the event less about one dominant genre and more about giving readers a broad tour of modern comics publishing.

A second free-comics event arrives alongside FCBD

According to the reported announcement, Penguin Random House did not reach an agreement with the new owners of Free Comic Book Day, although Lunar Distribution did. As a result, publishers distributed through Penguin Random House are appearing under the separate Comics Giveaway Day banner rather than in the official FCBD lineup (Bleeding Cool).

The distinction matters mainly at the retail level. Both events are built around participating comic shops distributing free comics and samplers, but readers will need to check which publishers and titles their local store has ordered. Penguin Random House’s official retailer information describes Comics Giveaway Day as a May 2 event featuring free samplers and comics across multiple age categories (Penguin Random House Comics Retail).

That gives 2026 a slightly unusual shape: comic-shop visitors may encounter two parallel collections of free material on the same Saturday. Free Comic Book Day’s announced titles include releases from publishers such as DC, Mad Cave Studios, Oni Press, Titan Comics, Vault Comics, and others, while the Comics Giveaway Day lineup covers several Penguin Random House-distributed publishers.

WEBTOON Unscrolled turns digital hits into print samplers

The WEBTOON Unscrolled Preview CGD 2026 is arguably the clearest bridge between mobile-first storytelling and the comic-shop format. The 32-page sampler introduces three graphic-novel series: Cursed Princess Club, Volume 1, Morgana and Oz, Volume 1, and Love Bites, Volume 1.

Cursed Princess Club follows Gwendolyn, the youngest and supposedly least perfect princess of the Pastel Kingdom, after romantic rejection sends her toward the mysterious Cursed Princess Club. The premise combines fairy-tale comedy, outsider identity, and magical self-discovery—ingredients that translate naturally to a character-driven sampler.

Morgana and Oz moves into supernatural romance, pairing a struggling witch with an angsty vampire from a rival clan. Their relationship is tied to the threat of war, giving the preview a familiar enemies-to-allies hook with fantasy stakes. Meanwhile, Love Bites centers on forbidden romance between vampire Kieran and Mason, the Alpha’s son, placing secret affection inside a conflict between rival supernatural worlds.

For readers already familiar with vertical-scroll webcomics, the sampler’s appeal is obvious: it offers a compact introduction to stories originally designed for serialized digital discovery. For print readers, it serves as a low-risk entry point into WEBTOON Unscrolled’s graphic-novel publishing program. Editorially, the selection also shows how strongly webtoon-to-print adaptations lean on immediately legible premises—princesses, vampires, witches, forbidden romance, and tightly defined fantasy communities.

Blue Lock brings color, while Dragon Circus adds fantasy

Kodansha’s Blue Lock Full Color Selection & Dragon Circus CGD 2026 takes a different approach. The sampler presents seven chapters focused on Yoichi Isagi from Blue Lock, with the material colorized for a future trade paperback edition planned for fall 2026. The timing is designed to connect the preview with the 2026 World Cup, giving fans a colorful showcase of one of manga’s most intense sports rivalries.

Color changes the reading experience of Blue Lock in a particularly interesting way. The series is built around explosive movement, aggressive facial expressions, spatial competition, and psychological pressure. A color edition can heighten those contrasts, making the field, uniforms, and visual emphasis of key plays easier to parse while giving familiar sequences a refreshed presentation.

The same sampler also previews Dragon Circus, a modern fantasy-action manga about an unconventional team: a vampire, an android, the animated remains of a legendary ogre, and a little girl. Their mission places them against an army of dragons, suggesting a deliberately strange ensemble adventure that contrasts with Blue Lock’s grounded competitive framework.

That pairing is smart sampler design. Blue Lock supplies immediate franchise recognition and high-impact action, while Dragon Circus gives readers an original fantasy concept to investigate. Manga fans can sample both a major sports title and a new genre property in a single issue.

IDW offers accessible starting points for genre fans

IDW’s two Comics Giveaway Day offerings are more familiar in structure: both are issue-one reprints intended to welcome new readers. Locke & Key #1: Comics Giveaway Day 2026 begins Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodríguez’s acclaimed dark-fantasy story about family, grief, legacy, and the supernatural doors of Keyhouse.

The first issue remains an effective recommendation for readers who enjoy horror with a strong emotional foundation. Rather than treating its magical setting as simple spectacle, Locke & Key uses the haunted-house premise to explore how families carry trauma and how places can become inseparable from memory. The free reissue is therefore aimed at both horror readers and newcomers seeking a substantial fantasy mystery.

Sonic the Hedgehog #1: Comics Giveaway Day 2026 offers a lighter, faster alternative. After stopping Dr. Eggman’s latest scheme, Sonic travels around the world to confront remaining Badnik attacks, with Tails joining him. The issue is being reissued with a new cover by Miles Arq, while the story credits include Ian Flynn with art from Jim Amash, Corey Breen, Matt Herms, Bob Smith, and Tracy Yardley.

As a free sample, Sonic has the advantage of instant readability. It promises motion, recognizable characters, and a straightforward adventure without requiring readers to understand a complicated continuity. That makes it one of the clearest choices for younger fans, longtime game followers, and anyone curious about IDW’s ongoing interpretation of the franchise.

A lineup built around discovery

The broader Comics Giveaway Day selection extends well beyond these four highlighted titles. Readers can also find material from BOOM!, Dark Horse Comics, Ignition Press, Marvel, Random House Children’s Books, Ten Speed Graphic, and TOKYOPOP, including Power Rangers, Something is Killing the Children, School Bus Graveyard, Mister Magic, and Disney Manga: Stitch! Best Food Forever! (Penguin Random House Comics Retail).

The strongest feature of the event is its variety. A webtoon reader can move from supernatural romance to manga action; a horror fan can try Locke & Key before exploring a new sampler; and a family visiting a comic shop can find all-ages and teen-oriented choices alongside mature material. For an industry increasingly shaped by crossover between digital platforms, manga, graphic novels, and licensed entertainment, Comics Giveaway Day offers a useful snapshot of how broad the modern comics audience has become.

Readers planning to participate should confirm whether their local comic shop is taking part and which titles it has received. Supplies may vary, but the central invitation is straightforward: use May 2, 2026, to sample something outside your usual reading lane—and let a free first issue or preview make the next recommendation.
