Jennifer English, the acclaimed voice actor known for her work as Shadowheart in Baldur’s Gate 3 and Maelle in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, is stepping away from the role of Gwendolyn in Eclipse Glow Games’ upcoming action-adventure game Tides of Annihilation. English said the decision was necessary to protect her mental and physical health as the project enters its next phase.
The change comes just weeks before Tides of Annihilation is scheduled to make its public hands-on debut at Gamescom 2026. For a game that has drawn considerable attention since its reveal, the recasting is significant—but it does not appear to signal a delay, cancellation, or wider production problem.
Jennifer English will remain involved as an advisor
English announced her departure through an Instagram story, describing it as a “difficult yet personally necessary decision.” She said she had recently needed to slow down and reassess her commitments, ultimately deciding to take time to rest and properly look after her wellbeing.
Although she will no longer provide Gwendolyn’s English voice, English is expected to remain connected to the project in an advisory role. She also introduced the development team to an unnamed actor whom she believes is a strong fit for the character.
That detail is important. English’s statement frames the transition as a carefully managed creative handoff rather than a complete break with Eclipse Glow Games. Her continued advisory involvement could help preserve some of the character work and performance direction established during the early stages of development.
Eclipse Glow Games said it was saddened by English’s decision but fully respected her choice to prioritize her health. The studio also praised the care and responsibility she brought to the role, saying her performance gave Gwendolyn depth, strength, vulnerability, and heart.
A new voice will debut in the Gamescom 2026 demo
The replacement performer has not been named. Eclipse Glow said the actor’s recent video game work made a strong impression on both English and the development team, and confirmed that she is already recording Gwendolyn’s English performance.
Players will hear the new interpretation for the first time in the Gamescom 2026 hands-on demo, as well as in selected official updates planned for August. That timing puts additional pressure on the performance, since the demo will be the first substantial opportunity for many players to judge how Tides of Annihilation sounds and feels in motion.
Replacing a lead voice actor this close to a public demo can be a delicate process, especially when the original performance has already become part of the game’s identity. However, the studio’s wording suggests the recasting has been integrated into the project rather than rushed as an emergency measure.
Why Tides of Annihilation has attracted attention
First revealed during Sony’s February 2025 State of Play, Tides of Annihilation is a single-player fantasy action-adventure game set across a shattered version of modern London. Its story combines Arthurian legend with a supernatural invasion, placing players in control of Gwendolyn as she searches for the Holy Grail.
The game’s central hook is its combination of contemporary British landmarks, mystical fantasy imagery, and fast-paced action combat. Gwendolyn can summon spectral members of the Knights of the Round Table, with players choosing which knights to bring into battle based on their preferred approach and the challenges ahead.
That setup gives the game an immediately recognizable identity. Its visual language recalls the grand fantasy scale of games such as Elden Ring, while its combat presentation has invited comparisons with stylish action series including Bayonetta and Devil May Cry. Those comparisons remain points of expectation rather than proof of how the final game will play, but they help explain why the project has become one of the more closely watched upcoming action titles from China.
The concept also places considerable weight on Gwendolyn as a character. She is not simply an avatar moving through a striking setting; she is the emotional center of a story involving family, loss, Arthurian mythology, and the collapse of a familiar world. The new actor will therefore have to establish a distinct performance while maintaining continuity with the character work already shown.
Release details remain limited
Tides of Annihilation does not yet have a confirmed release date. The game is planned for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, with the Xbox version listed as a single-player action-adventure title and supporting Xbox Play Anywhere.
The Gamescom demo should offer the clearest look yet at Eclipse Glow’s ambitions, particularly its combat systems, presentation, and approach to navigating its modern-fantasy London. Until that footage is available, it is difficult to determine whether the project can match the spectacle of its trailers or distinguish itself from the growing number of high-profile action games coming out of China.
For now, the most immediate story is a human one. English’s departure is a reminder that major game productions involve demanding workloads even for established performers, and that stepping back for health reasons should not be treated as a failure. Tides of Annihilation will continue with a new voice for Gwendolyn, while English’s advisory role suggests that her contribution to the character and the project is not being discarded.
