The Transformers: The Movie is returning to theaters in the United States and United Kingdom on September 17, 2026, and this 4K re-release comes with an unusual bonus: a never-before-seen cinematic chapter scheduled to play after the credits. Fathom Events and Hasbro revealed the footage through a new trailer, giving longtime franchise fans a fresh reason to revisit the 1986 animated film on the big screen.

A New Chapter After the Credits

The additional material is being presented as a “never-before-seen” chapter rather than a conventional trailer or behind-the-scenes feature. Details about its story have not been disclosed, but its placement after the credits gives the theatrical event a modern franchise twist familiar to audiences who follow anime, superhero films, and other serialized entertainment.

That framing may be especially appealing to digital-comics readers. Webtoons and manhwa have helped normalize stories that unfold across installments, seasons, and multiple forms of media, while post-credits scenes have become a popular way to suggest that a familiar world still has more stories to tell. In this case, the new footage adds an element of discovery to a film whose major plot points have been known to fans for decades.

Why the 1986 Film Still Matters

Toei Animation produced The Transformers: The Movie as a continuation of the first animated television seasons of The Transformers. The film follows the long-running conflict between the heroic Autobots, led by Optimus Prime, and the Decepticons, led by Megatron, before expanding the scale of the story with the arrival of Unicron, a planet-sized transforming threat.

In the film’s central conflict, Unicron moves toward Cybertron with the goal of consuming the Transformers’ homeworld and erasing both factions from existence. The Autobots’ best hope is the Autobot Matrix of Leadership, but reaching that point requires the characters to survive a dangerous mission filled with new enemies and escalating threats.

The voice cast includes Peter Cullen as Optimus Prime, Frank Welker as Megatron, and Orson Welles as Unicron. Welles’ performance is particularly notable within the film’s history, since the role marked one of the final voice performances associated with the celebrated actor known for Citizen Kane.

A 4K Event Built for Franchise Fans

The 2026 screening follows an earlier theatrical re-release in the United States in September 2021, which marked the movie’s 35th anniversary. That event was accompanied by a limited-edition steelbook from Shout! Factory, while the home-video release introduced the film on 4K UHD with a new 4K transfer created from the original 35mm film.

The new engagement therefore functions as more than a routine revival. It combines a restored presentation of a major animated franchise film with previously unseen footage, making the theatrical experience distinct from simply watching an existing home-video edition. For collectors and fans who value animation history, the chance to see the film in a cinema setting remains part of the attraction.

Some theaters in the United States will also offer collectible popcorn buckets and drinkware. These items position the screenings as fan-focused events, although availability will depend on the participating locations.

International Screenings and Ticket Information

Tickets for the United States and United Kingdom screenings are scheduled to go on sale on August 7, 2026. Hasbro also plans screenings in Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, and Germany, with additional markets expected to be announced later.

The September 17 date is also being promoted as “Transformers Day,” giving the event a clear place on the franchise calendar. For viewers who discovered the property through later animated series, live-action films, comics, or digital fan communities, the re-release offers a chance to experience one of its defining animated chapters in its original theatrical format.

The post-credits chapter is still being kept under wraps, so its importance to the wider Transformers continuity remains unknown. For now, the confirmed appeal is straightforward: a 4K presentation of the 1986 film, a new piece of cinematic footage, and an international theatrical event designed to turn a familiar classic into a fresh night out for franchise audiences.
