Rockstar Co-Founder Loves Physical Media but Doesn’t Personally Care About Game Discs

Dan Houser does not sound particularly worried about the future of physical game releases. The Rockstar co-founder told IGN that he was unsure whether he personally cared if games continued arriving on discs, while also insisting that players who want physical copies should still be able to buy them. His comments arrive at a moment when the console market is moving decisively toward digital distribution—and when Grand Theft Auto VI is set to become one of the most prominent major releases without a traditional game disc.

“I don’t know that I care. If people want that, I think companies should provide it,” Houser said. He then added a qualification that will sound familiar to anyone who has watched modern games evolve: “I don’t know that I personally care.”

That is not quite the same as dismissing physical media. In fact, Houser later said, “I love physical media,” a sentiment echoed by his longtime collaborator Jeffrey Crawford “Lazlow” Jones. The pair’s position is less an argument against boxed games than an acknowledgment that convenience, preservation, ownership, and nostalgia now pull the industry in different directions.

Houser sees updates as one of digital gaming’s biggest advantages

Houser’s most practical point concerned patches. He argued that the ability to update games after launch has been important to improving their quality, particularly as developers continue working on increasingly complex productions. For players who remember installing games from multiple discs—or waiting for a magazine to distribute a patch—this is a distinctly modern trade-off.

Physical releases never entirely existed outside the update ecosystem. Console games received patches long before digital storefronts became dominant, while PC players have relied on downloadable fixes, magazine cover discs, and community-made patches for decades. The difference today is that a physical copy can function less as the complete product and more as a license key or installation prompt.

That distinction is especially important for Grand Theft Auto VI. Rockstar’s official pre-order information confirms that the game will have a physical retail version, but the box will contain a download code rather than a conventional game disc. In other words, GTA VI is physically sold but digitally delivered. For collectors, that preserves the box, artwork, and retail presence while removing much of the practical value traditionally associated with owning a disc.

GTA VI is a major test for the code-in-the-box model

Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar has not announced a PC version for launch. Because the game is one of the most anticipated releases in the medium’s history, its distribution strategy will likely receive far more scrutiny than the same decision would from a smaller publisher.

A disc-based release would offer obvious benefits to some console players. It could provide a more tangible form of ownership, allow buyers to trade or resell their copy, and preserve at least part of the launch version independently of a storefront. It would also give retailers a traditional product to stock at a time when physical game shelves are already shrinking.

The download-code approach offers different advantages. Rockstar can avoid manufacturing and shipping a disc capable of holding a huge modern game, streamline production, and ensure that players download the latest version from the start. For a publisher operating at GTA’s enormous scale, those efficiencies may be difficult to ignore.

Still, the model creates an awkward middle ground. Customers are asked to buy a physical product without receiving the physical software that historically justified the purchase. The box becomes a collectible, while the code remains dependent on a digital storefront, an internet connection, and the continued availability of the relevant platform infrastructure.

PlayStation’s 2028 decision raises the stakes

The broader debate intensified after Sony announced that physical disc production for new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will end in January 2028. Existing games and titles releasing before that point will not be affected by the announcement, but future PlayStation releases will be sold digitally, including through retailers offering digital formats.

That timing makes GTA VI particularly interesting. Rockstar’s next open-world blockbuster is scheduled to arrive before Sony’s cutoff, meaning it could still have a conventional retail presence even without a disc inside the package. It may become an early example of a future that the PlayStation announcement makes increasingly difficult to avoid: physical game packaging surviving after physical game media has disappeared.

Sony’s decision also highlights why Houser’s comments are more nuanced than the headline suggests. He is not arguing that physical releases should vanish. His view is that companies should serve the customers who want them, while recognizing that digital distribution has made it easier to patch, update, and maintain games after launch.

The emotional value of a box still matters

Lazlow offered the most personal defense of physical media during the interview, describing the satisfaction of having something tangible that says, “Look, we made a thing.” That feeling is difficult to measure, but it remains central to collecting. A boxed game can represent a memory, a favorite studio, a particular console era, or simply the achievement of finishing a large creative project.

He also acknowledged the appeal of digital ownership in everyday life, pointing to the convenience of downloading games to a Steam Deck while traveling. That contrast captures the current market better than the usual physical-versus-digital arguments. Players can want the convenience of a digital library and still value a shelf full of boxed games.

For GTA VI, the question is not whether physical media still has an audience. It clearly does. The more revealing question is whether publishers believe that audience is large enough to justify producing complete physical copies rather than collectible packaging with a download code.

Houser’s answer is ultimately a pragmatic one: give people what they want, but do not pretend the old format is automatically better for every game or every player. As Grand Theft Auto VI moves toward launch, its code-in-the-box release may show just how far the industry has traveled from the days when a stack of installation discs felt like proof that a game was important.
