Keiku Hagiwara’s latest manga arrives in English with a deceptively romantic setup and a much darker story waiting underneath. Whoever You Are, I Love You Volume 1 follows a woman who believes she has found the perfect fiancé, only to discover that her dating-app romance may be connected to a suspicious death.

Published by Kodansha under the Vertical imprint, the 164-page release went on sale in English on June 23, 2026, in both print and digital formats. The book is rated 16+ and blends drama, romance, and thriller elements into a story that quickly moves beyond a conventional relationship drama.

Hagiwara is known in English-speaking manga circles for works including Do You Still Take Me for Better or for Worse? and Show It To Me, Baby! This new series, originally titled Kimi ga Daredemo Aishiteru in Japan, takes a more suspenseful route while still keeping emotional relationships at the center of the story.

A perfect engagement with troubling cracks

At 32, Yuki Sato is working as a temporary receptionist while holding tightly to one major dream: getting married and allowing her father, who suffered a stroke two years earlier, to see her in a wedding dress. She believes that dream is finally within reach after becoming engaged to the attractive Yoji Goto.

There is one problem. Yoji repeatedly avoids meeting Yuki’s father, insisting that debt has made marriage financially difficult. Rather than questioning the situation too closely, Yuki accepts his explanation. Yoji even encourages her to keep using dating apps to meet wealthy men who might be able to help him resolve his financial problems.

That arrangement is clearly uncomfortable from the outside. Yuki’s devotion has created an idealized version of Yoji, but the manga makes it clear almost immediately that readers are not meant to trust him. His behavior, the framing of his conversations with Yuki, and the growing unease around their relationship all suggest that this engagement is built on more than affection.

Shun Majima changes the entire story

The mystery takes shape when Yuki meets Shun Majima. Shun is investigating the death of his older brother, Kosuke, who had previously matched with Yuki through a dating app before she introduced him to Yoji.

Kosuke’s wife, Hiromi, has also disappeared, leading Shun to suspect that his brother may have been murdered for insurance money. Kosuke reportedly began behaving strangely after meeting Yoji, giving Shun a reason to believe that Yuki’s fiancé may be involved.

Yuki initially refuses to accept Shun’s accusations. After all, believing him would mean admitting that the future she has imagined may be a complete lie. Their uneasy partnership becomes the volume’s main source of momentum, as Shun tries to uncover evidence while Yuki slowly begins to confront the warning signs she has been ignoring.

The result is a story that works best when it focuses on emotional manipulation. Yuki is not simply fooled because she is naïve; she is desperate for her carefully constructed future to be real. That makes her situation more uncomfortable, but also more compelling, because every new revelation threatens both her safety and her sense of identity.

A tense opening with plenty of room to grow

Volume 1 is ambitious. The combination of romance, dating-app deception, insurance fraud, missing persons, and murder investigation could easily become too melodramatic. Hagiwara does not resolve that concern completely in the opening volume, but the early chapters establish enough tension to make the larger mystery worth following.

The artwork is particularly effective at showing the divide between Yuki’s perception and reality. Hagiwara often uses compact panels packed with dialogue, which can make some scenes feel crowded, but the deliberate expressions and visual framing communicate the characters’ discomfort well. Yuki’s attempts to maintain a perfect image of Yoji are often undermined by the art before she is ready to acknowledge what is happening.

In an afterword, Hagiwara explains that the series was created as a challenge and as an attempt to do something difficult and unfamiliar. That sense of experimentation is visible in the book’s shifting tone. It begins with the shape of a romance manga, then gradually reveals a crime thriller hiding beneath the surface.

The English edition was translated by Annelise Ogaard and lettered by Lorina Mapa. Readers also receive a color opening page featuring Yuki, Yoji, and Shun, though there are no major additional extras.

In Japan, the manga is complete at four volumes, with the final volume released in 2025. For English readers, the first book offers a strong hook rather than a complete mystery, ending with plenty of questions surrounding Yoji, Shun’s investigation, and the role Yuki may have played in the tragedy.

Whoever You Are, I Love You Volume 1 is worth watching for readers who enjoy romance stories with a dangerous edge. Its premise may eventually push into exaggerated territory, but Hagiwara has created enough unease—and enough emotional vulnerability—to make the next volume an enticing prospect.
