Food manga and romance have always made a satisfying combination, but these nine titles show just how broad that pairing can be. From barbecue dates and homemade miso soup to strawberry farms, traditional wagashi, and international travel, each series uses food as more than decoration: meals become a language for affection, ambition, family, grief, and everyday intimacy.

This recommendation list covers completed and ongoing manga across slice-of-life, shoujo, BL, yuri, drama, and thriller. Some are gentle comfort reads, while others bring serious emotional stakes to the kitchen table.

Comfort Food, Domestic Romance, and Everyday Connection

How to Grill Our Love by Shiori Hanatsuka

Published in English by Kodansha, How to Grill Our Love begins with Kenta Fukuyama, a 30-year-old man whose attempts at dating repeatedly go wrong. After meeting Chihiro Yamaguchi at a yakiniku restaurant, Kenta receives an unexpected marriage proposal when a work transfer threatens to separate them.

The premise moves quickly, but the appeal comes from what happens afterward: two people who barely know each other gradually learn how to function as a married couple. Barbecue is the series’ central bonding ritual, giving nearly every chapter a warm domestic rhythm while also allowing Kenta and Chihiro to express care through food. Readers looking for low-conflict romance, awkward newlyweds, and plenty of grilled meat should find this an easy recommendation.

She Loves to Cook, and She Loves to Eat by Sakaomi Yuzaki

Yen Press classifies this series as slice-of-life, LGBTQ romance, yuri, and food manga, and that combination captures its appeal. Nomoto cooks to relax but often prepares more food than she can eat alone, while her neighbor Kasuga has both the appetite and the enthusiasm to help.

The relationship develops through shared meals rather than grand romantic gestures. Cooking creates a safe space where Nomoto and Kasuga can discuss identity, sexuality, social expectations, food habits, and the pressure to live according to other people’s ideas of womanhood. The series is gentle without being shallow, pairing generous food imagery with thoughtful character development. It is especially well suited to readers who want a slow-burn romance with emotional honesty and a strong sense of everyday life.

Let’s Eat Together, Aki & Haru by Makoto Taji

This BL slice-of-life manga follows university students Aki and Haru, roommates whose relationship is built around cooking, eating, and spending time together. Aki is the more energetic cook, while Haru brings a calmer personality and a considerable appetite to their shared meals.

The romance is deliberately understated, particularly in the early chapters. Instead, the story focuses on the comfort of routine: deciding what to make, improvising with whatever is available, inviting friends over, and turning an ordinary dinner into an occasion. That low-pressure structure makes the manga a strong choice for readers who prefer affectionate chemistry over dramatic twists.

Sweet Shoujo Drama With Culinary Ambition

Kitchen Princess by Miyuki Kobayashi and Natsumi Ando

Kitchen Princess combines cooking-school ambition with classic shoujo melodrama. Najika Kazami transfers to a prestigious academy in search of the boy she remembers as her “flan prince,” while also pursuing her dream of becoming a professional pastry chef.

The story uses baking competitions, rivalries, friendship, and romance to explore grief, confidence, and the pressure placed on young people with big dreams. Its emotional swings can be wonderfully dramatic, but the cooking scenes and dessert-focused storytelling give the series a distinctive sweetness. Kodansha’s English edition is available in omnibus volumes, making it a good pick for readers interested in an older-school shoujo experience with a strong culinary hook.

Mixed Vegetables by Ayumi Komura

VIZ describes Mixed Vegetables as a story about two high school students whose family backgrounds pull them toward opposite culinary careers. Hanayu Ashitaba wants to become a sushi chef despite being the daughter of a pastry chef, while Hayato Hyuga comes from a sushi family but dreams of becoming a pastry chef.

Hanayu initially approaches Hayato with a questionable plan: if she marries into his family, she may be able to pursue sushi without disappointing her father. The setup sounds like an exaggerated romantic comedy, and the manga does lean into that energy, but the story gradually becomes more interested in family expectations, personal responsibility, and the difference between pursuing a dream and using another person to reach it. It is a particularly good match for readers who enjoy food-themed shoujo with plenty of complications.

Travel, Farming, and Romance With a Distinctive Flavor

Our Not-So-Lonely Planet Travel Guide by Mone Sorai

This BL romance follows Asahi Suzumura and Mitsuki Sayama, a mismatched couple who agree to travel around the world and marry if their relationship survives the journey. Food is not the sole focus, but every destination adds new dishes, ingredients, restaurants, and cultural experiences to the story.

The manga’s strongest feature is the way travel becomes a test of communication. The pair visit famous locations, experience unfamiliar customs, and gradually confront questions they have avoided in their relationship. TOKYOPOP’s English release reached its seventh volume in June 2026, completing the translated series. Readers who enjoy travel manga, gentle BL, and romance built around shared experiences should place this near the top of their list.

Strawberry Love by Irono

In Strawberry Love, university student Sara Moritani helps at her injured grandfather’s strawberry farm, where she works alongside Minori Sugiura. His intimidating appearance hides a kind personality and an intense enthusiasm for strawberries.

The series is more romance-centered than some of the other recommendations here, but its strawberry theme remains central through farming, fruit, and strawberry-based sweets. The relationship moves quickly and stays relatively uncomplicated, giving the manga a light, sweet tone. The age-gap element is a significant part of the premise, so readers who prefer romances without that dynamic may want to approach this one cautiously.

Food as Family, Memory, and Mystery

Misoshiru de Kanpai! by Sai Sasano

Known in English as Let’s Make Miso Soup! in some references, this completed series follows childhood friends Zenichirou and Yae. After discovering that Zen relies on convenience-store food for breakfast, Yae begins preparing homemade meals for him, reviving a childhood promise in the process.

Miso soup gives the story its structure and its emotional vocabulary. The manga explores different types of miso, regional variations, preparation methods, and the cultural meaning of a comforting breakfast. Beneath the cooking lessons is a tender coming-of-age romance about family, grief, and the changing meaning of being needed. It is an excellent choice for readers who want food education woven into a gentle, character-driven story.

Something’s Wrong With Us by Natsumi Ando

For readers who want their food romance with considerably darker stakes, Something’s Wrong With Us offers a dramatic change of pace. Nao works as a wagashi maker, creating traditional Japanese sweets, while Tsubaki is connected to the family whose past is tied to the death of Nao’s mother.

The series combines romance, psychological suspense, family secrets, and the highly visual craft of wagashi. Beautiful confections sit alongside suspicion and emotional danger, making each culinary scene feel connected to the story’s larger questions about memory, identity, and inherited conflict. Kodansha’s English edition is complete at 19 volumes, and the mature rating reflects the manga’s darker material. This is the title to choose when “food romance” should come with genuine tension.

Together, these nine manga demonstrate that food can function as a love language, a career, a cultural bridge, or even evidence in a mystery. Whether you want a quiet dinner shared by neighbors, a dramatic pastry competition, a worldwide romantic journey, or a suspense story built around wagashi, there is a satisfying entry point here for nearly every kind of romance reader.
