Roujin Z is heading back to Japanese cinemas in a new 4K remastered edition, giving Hiroyuki Kitakubo and Katsuhiro Otomo’s sharp, chaotic sci-fi anime another big-screen moment. The limited revival begins on December 18, 2026, with a wider nationwide release planned for spring 2027.

The first screenings will run for one week at Theatre Shinjuku in Tokyo and Theatre Umeda in Osaka. Tokyo Theatres has also released an announcement video featuring the original 1991 teaser trailer, offering longtime fans a nostalgic look at the film while introducing the new remastered presentation.

Released in Japan in September 1991, Roujin Z runs for 84 minutes and combines futuristic technology, social satire, dark comedy, and high-speed mechanical mayhem. The revival is the third installment in an initiative celebrating both the film’s 35th anniversary and the 80th anniversary of Tokyo Theatres, the company behind its distribution and theater management.

A high-tech nursing bed becomes the center of a wild chase

The story follows an elderly man selected for Project Z, a government-backed experiment involving a special nursing bed equipped with a sixth-generation computer. The machine is designed to provide round-the-clock care, but the project quickly becomes far more complicated than a medical demonstration.

When the man’s former private nurse becomes concerned about his treatment, she sets out to rescue him from the experiment. The situation takes an even stranger turn when the computer begins to display the personality of the old man’s late wife, sending the nursing bed—and the authorities pursuing it—into a frantic chase through Tokyo.

That premise gives Roujin Z an unusual balance of human drama and outrageous science-fiction action. Its central conflict is not simply about a machine malfunctioning; it is also about whether technology can care for people without stripping away their dignity and independence.

A remarkable lineup of future anime heavyweights

Kitakubo, best known for directing Blood: The Last Vampire, directed the film from a screenplay by Otomo, the creator and director associated with AKIRA. The production also brought together an extraordinary group of animation talent who would go on to shape anime in the decades that followed.

Fumio Iida served as animation director, with Hiroshi Sasaki as art director. The animation staff included Satoshi Kon, Kenji Kamiyama, Kazuchika Kise, Hiroyuki Okiura, Kazuya Tsurumaki, Toshiyuki Inoue, and Koji Morimoto.

For viewers discovering the film through the 4K revival, that staff list is one of its biggest attractions. Satoshi Kon would later direct Perfect Blue, Millennium Actress, and Paprika, while Kenji Kamiyama became a major director through works including Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. Other contributors likewise went on to become influential directors, character designers, and animation directors.

Why this revival matters

Roujin Z was already notable when it arrived in 1991, but its concerns have only become more recognizable with time. The film looks at an aging society, automated care, government experimentation, and the uneasy relationship between convenience and control—all while presenting those ideas through an energetic genre adventure.

The film was also recognized with the Best Animated Film Award at that year’s Mainichi Film Awards. Its continued popularity in Japan and overseas has helped keep it in circulation, and the new remaster creates an opportunity to see its detailed animation and eccentric mechanical designs in a modern theatrical format.

At this stage, the confirmed theatrical plans are limited to Japan: a one-week engagement beginning December 18, 2026, at Theatre Shinjuku and Theatre Umeda, followed by a nationwide release in spring 2027. Fans should keep an eye on Tokyo Theatres for additional venue information and further details about the rollout as the anniversary screenings approach.
