Netflix is charting a fresh course for one of anime’s biggest adventures. THE ONE PIECE, a brand-new adaptation of Eiichiro Oda’s manga, will premiere exclusively on Netflix in February 2027, retelling Luffy’s journey from the very beginning of the East Blue Saga.
The project is notable not only because it revisits one of the most recognizable openings in manga history, but also because it comes from WIT STUDIO, the animation house best known to many viewers for SPY x FAMILY. Rather than continuing the long-running television anime, this series will offer a new adaptation of the original story starting with Chapter 1.
Netflix has confirmed that the first season will cover approximately the first 50 chapters of the manga across seven episodes. The complete season will be released at once, with a combined runtime of around 300 minutes. The story will lead up to Luffy’s first encounter with Sanji, the chef of the floating restaurant Baratie.
A new anime voyage begins in the East Blue
For longtime fans, the East Blue Saga remains the foundation of ONE PIECE. It introduces Monkey D. Luffy, his dream of becoming King of the Pirates, and the early members of the crew who will eventually become the Straw Hat Pirates.
Beginning again with Luffy’s childhood and first steps toward the sea gives the new series a clear entry point for viewers who may not have followed the original anime’s enormous episode count. The existing television adaptation began in 1999 and has grown into a sprawling long-running production, while THE ONE PIECE is being presented as a separate, newly produced version of Oda’s original manga.
The first season’s endpoint is also an interesting one. Reaching Luffy’s meeting with Sanji at Baratie suggests that the opening run will focus on establishing the captain’s ambitions, his early friendships, and the events that shape the crew before its journey expands into the wider Grand Line.
WIT STUDIO leads the production
WIT STUDIO is handling animation production, with Masashi Koizuka directing. Hideaki Abe is credited as assistant director, while Taku Kishimoto oversees series composition.
The visual team includes Kyoji Asano and Takatoshi Honda as character designers and chief animation directors. Yasuhiro Kajino is responsible for creature design and image boards, Eri Taguchi handles prop design, and Tomonori Kuroda serves as art director. Ken Imaizumi and Shuhei Fukuda are listed as action animators, with Ryoma Kawamura credited as animation producer.
That creative lineup gives the project a substantial team behind its first new take on the East Blue material. However, Netflix has not announced a voice cast or revealed whether the production will feature returning performers from the existing anime. Those details remain something to watch for as the February 2027 release approaches.
The first look returns to Windmill Village
The newly revealed concept art focuses on Windmill Village, the place where Luffy spent his childhood and where his dream of becoming a pirate began to take shape.
The scene shows young Luffy alongside Red-Hair Pirates captain Shanks, first mate Benn Beckman, and Makino, the owner of the village bar. The image captures a relaxed moment at PARTYS BAR, emphasizing the warmth of Luffy’s connection with Shanks and the unexpected kindness of the visiting pirates.
It is a fitting image for the project’s first major tease. Before the treasure hunts, sea battles, strange islands, and growing crew, ONE PIECE begins with a boy in a small village and the promise of a much larger world beyond the horizon.
Oda’s manga first appeared in Weekly Shonen Jump in 1997 and has since become a global phenomenon. Netflix’s announcement states that the manga had surpassed 600 million copies in circulation worldwide as of March 2026, underlining the scale of the audience awaiting this latest interpretation.
THE ONE PIECE is scheduled to premiere in February 2027, exclusively on Netflix, with all seven episodes arriving together. Netflix has not yet provided a specific release day, trailer, or cast announcement, so those are the next major pieces of information worth keeping an eye on as the new adaptation prepares to set sail.
