Kodansha has confirmed that Nene Azuki’s web manga Mii-chan to Yamada-san will receive an anime adaptation in 2027. The announcement arrived alongside a commemorative illustration from Azuki, giving fans their first official look at the project’s transition from Magazine Pocket hit to animated drama.

There is still plenty left to learn about the adaptation. Kodansha has not announced the anime’s studio, staff, cast, episode count, format, or streaming plans, so the 2027 premiere window is currently the only confirmed broadcast information. A special promotional video was also released as part of the announcement, adding an early glimpse at the series’ unsettling nightlife setting and emotionally heavy story.

For longtime manga readers, the adaptation is a notable development for a series that has built a substantial following in a relatively short time. Mii-chan to Yamada-san began serialization on Kodansha’s Magazine Pocket website in September 2024, and the manga’s collected volumes have now surpassed 2.8 million copies in circulation.

A friendship born in Shinjuku’s nightlife scene

The story takes place in Shinjuku, where host and hostess clubs offer customers an escape into a world of glamorous companions, expensive drinks, and carefully maintained personas. Yamada is one of the women working in that environment, juggling university life with a job that offers far more immediate rewards than her studies.

Rather than aiming to become a top student, Yamada becomes increasingly interested in mastering the hostess business. The work is lucrative, but it is also unstable, with women constantly entering and leaving the industry. Her perspective begins to change in 2012, when she meets Mii-chan.

Mii-chan is small, awkward, and seemingly ill-equipped for the demands of the job. She struggles with basic reading and writing, makes frequent mistakes, and becomes an easy target for ridicule from both coworkers and customers. Yet her cheerful energy and determination gradually make her impossible for Yamada to ignore.

What follows is not a conventional workplace comedy or a simple tale of opposites attracting. Yamada and Mii-chan form an unlikely bond while trying to survive an environment built around performance, money, and judgment. The official synopsis points toward a beautiful but tragic story, one shaped by the friendship’s eventual separation.

The manga is heading toward its final volume

The anime announcement arrives as the manga approaches its conclusion. Kodansha released the sixth volume on April 23, 2026, while the seventh and final volume is scheduled to arrive in Japan on September 9, 2026.

That timing could make the anime especially interesting to follow. Unlike adaptations announced while their source manga remains open-ended, Mii-chan to Yamada-san will have a completed story available before the animated version premieres. That gives the production a clear endpoint, although there is no confirmation yet about how much of the manga the anime will cover.

The upcoming seventh volume also promises to bring the manga’s central relationship to a painful turning point. Kodansha’s description follows Mii-chan and Yamada as they confront the consequences of living together, family trauma, and the difficult realities waiting for them after they are separated. Details about the anime’s approach to those later developments remain unknown.

English readers will get their chance this December

Seven Seas Entertainment announced its English-language license for the series on January 28, 2026. The publisher will release the first volume of Mii-chan and Miss Yamada in English on December 8, 2026, shortly after the Japanese manga reaches its finale.

The English edition gives international readers a chance to discover the series before the anime arrives. Its release also places the manga in an appealing position for fans who prefer to read the original story first, especially given the work’s dramatic tone and the importance of its relationship-driven storytelling.

The series has already earned recognition in Japan, ranking fourth in the Male Readers’ Top 20 of Kono Manga ga Sugoi! 2026. It was also nominated in the General category of the 50th Kodansha Manga Awards, further highlighting the attention surrounding Azuki’s work.

With the seventh volume due in September, the English debut following in December, and the anime set for 2027, Mii-chan to Yamada-san has a busy road ahead. The next major updates worth keeping an eye on are the anime’s studio, cast, staff, and a more specific premiere date.
