Dynamite’s Fire and Ice: Darkwolf #2 arrives in comic shops on Wednesday, August 12, continuing the masked warrior’s brutal journey through a frozen wilderness. Written by Dan Panosian and illustrated by Andrey Lunatik, the issue puts Darkwolf between a vulnerable group of refugees and a threat that appears to be something less—or more—than human.

For readers drawn to sword-and-sorcery comics, Frank Frazetta-inspired fantasy, and the harsher edge of adventure storytelling, the second issue looks ready to build on the bloody momentum of the new series.

A Dangerous Escort Mission

The central conflict in Darkwolf #2 is less about conquest than protection. Darkwolf is attempting to guide his charges along a dangerous road to safety, with the group traveling through snow-covered terrain while hostile forces close in. The preview positions the warrior as both guardian and potential threat, emphasizing the tension between his protective instincts and the savagery that makes him such an effective fighter.

Among those under Darkwolf’s protection are a family of refugees, including twins whose unusual birth makes them valuable to the forces pursuing them. That detail gives the issue a strong fantasy-adventure hook without explaining away the larger mystery. Why are the twins important, and who—or what—is willing to spill blood to claim them?

The official solicitation promises that a relentless, “not quite human” threat will descend on the travelers. The wording leaves plenty of room for monsters, sorcery, or something more unsettling, but the preview makes one point clear: Darkwolf’s enemies are not ordinary bandits who can be pushed aside with a single swing of his weapon.

Panosian and Lunatik’s Savage Fantasy

Dan Panosian’s script continues to lean into the character’s reputation as a mythic, almost folkloric protector. Darkwolf is not presented as a conventional knight or polished hero. He is a masked figure from the mountains, a warrior whose presence carries menace even when he is defending the innocent.

That contradiction is one of the character’s most compelling qualities. Darkwolf’s methods are violent, but the issue’s premise gives that violence a purpose. He is shepherding people who cannot defend themselves through a landscape where mercy may be impossible. The story’s dramatic question is not simply whether Darkwolf can defeat the next threat, but whether he can remain in control while doing so.

Andrey Lunatik’s artwork is well suited to that material. The preview pages place the characters against broad snowy landscapes, giving the journey a sense of isolation and scale. Darkwolf’s silhouette cuts a particularly imposing figure against the wilderness, while the movement of horses, fleeing travelers, and sudden attacks keeps the pages grounded in physical danger.

The visual approach also reinforces the series’ connection to the larger Fire and Ice mythos. Rather than presenting a clean or brightly illuminated fantasy kingdom, Darkwolf favors cold forests, bloodshed, rough weapons, and supernatural menace. It is a world where survival often depends on recognizing danger before it arrives.

A New Chapter in the Fire and Ice Mythos

Dynamite’s modern Fire and Ice comics expand the world associated with the 1983 animated film created through the collaboration of Ralph Bakshi and fantasy artist Frank Frazetta. The earlier comic series explored the setting and its characters as a prequel to the film, while Fire and Ice: Darkwolf shifts the spotlight toward one of the property’s most mysterious warriors.

The new series began with a mother and her twins fleeing the warlock who sired them before Darkwolf intervened. That setup makes the second issue feel like a continuation of an escape story rather than a standalone monster hunt. The immediate threat may be closing in, but the larger danger remains unresolved.

That structure should give the series room to develop Darkwolf beyond his familiar image as a silent, masked fighter. His role as a mentor and protector introduces the possibility of a more character-driven story, even as the book maintains the violent fantasy atmosphere readers expect from the property.

Release Details and Collector Appeal

Fire and Ice: Darkwolf #2 is published by Dynamite Entertainment and is scheduled for release on August 12, 2026. The 32-page, full-color comic carries a $4.99 cover price and a Teen+ rating. Panosian serves as both writer and cover artist, with Andrey Lunatik providing the interior art.

As with many Dynamite releases, the issue is available with a broad selection of covers. Confirmed cover artists include Stjepan Sejic, Joe Jusko, Stuart Sayger, Cary Nord, Robert Hack, and Fernando Proietti, alongside Panosian’s cover. The range gives collectors several distinct interpretations of Darkwolf, from classic fantasy illustration to more stylized and atmospheric designs.

The variant lineup is likely to be one of the issue’s main attractions for collectors, particularly for fans of Frazetta-inspired fantasy art and Dynamite’s licensed comic offerings. For readers primarily interested in the story, however, the key draw remains the creative team and the promise of a darker chapter in Darkwolf’s mission.

Based on the preview, Fire and Ice: Darkwolf #2 is shaping up as a transitional issue: Darkwolf is still focused on getting his charges to safety, but the forces surrounding them are becoming stranger and more dangerous. The bloodshed may be immediate, yet the real threat appears to be waiting further down the road.

Readers looking for a new sword-and-sorcery series with a brutal edge should find plenty to investigate when the issue reaches stores this week.
