Subaru’s role is changing
Since the anime premiered in 2016, Subaru has been defined by a brutal contradiction: he can return to an earlier point after dying, but he cannot simply reset the emotional damage left behind. Season 4 retains the central Japanese voice cast, including Yusuke Kobayashi as Subaru, Rie Takahashi as Emilia, Satomi Arai as Beatrice, Rie Murakawa as Ram, and Inori Minase as Rem. The returning lineup also includes Takuya Eguchi as Julius, Kana Ueda as Anastasia, Eri Suzuki as Meili, and Fairouz Ai as Shaula.
White Fox continues as the animation studio. Masahiro Shinohara directs, with Tappei Nagatsuki supervising the script, Masahiro Yokotani handling series composition, and Haruka Segawa serving as character designer and chief animation director. Kenichiro Suehiro also returns to provide the music.
The production team has introduced additional characters for the new arc, including Reid Astrea, voiced by Tomokazu Sugita, and the Sin Archbishops representing some of the season’s most dangerous threats. Their presence reinforces the sense that Subaru is moving into a more expansive and unpredictable part of the story.
The season’s music also reflects its transitional mood. Konomi Suzuki featuring Ashnikko performs the opening theme “Recollect,” while MYTH & ROID featuring TK from Ling tosite sigure provide the ending theme “Ender Ember.” Following the conclusion of the first half, Emilia voice actor Rie Takahashi also returned to the microphone for “Stay Alive 〜Regain〜,” a new version connected to the character’s continuing emotional journey.
For longtime fans, the next date to watch is August 12, when the “Recapture Arc” begins.
