WEBTOON is expanding its creator-support infrastructure throughout 2026, with new monetization tools, international events, educational resources, and a formal Creator Residency program. The initiative matters because it targets the difficult gap between publishing a successful vertical-scroll comic and building a sustainable long-term career around it.

Announced by WEBTOON Entertainment in December 2025 and reported publicly in January 2026, the program represents a broader attempt to support creators at several stages of their careers. While the platform is best known for finished Originals such as Lore Olympus and True Beauty, much of its creative pipeline begins with independent artists and writers publishing through WEBTOON CANVAS.

A residency designed around the realities of webtoon production

The centerpiece of the expansion is the WEBTOON Creator Residency, which officially rolls out in 2026 after a year-long pilot program hosted 23 creators in 2025. The residency will be held twice a year, bringing groups of up to nine creators from the English-language Originals service to WEBTOON’s Los Angeles headquarters for a two-week, in-person workshop.

Participants will work directly with WEBTOON editors during story-development sessions, attend workshops, and meet teams from across the company. The stated goal is not simply to polish individual episodes, but to give creators time and structured support to refine their craft, plan future projects, and better understand the platform’s wider creative and business ecosystem.

That focus is particularly relevant to vertical comics, where creators must balance storytelling, artwork, lettering, pacing, deadlines, and the physical demands of producing long-form episodes for mobile screens. The 2025 pilot reportedly included sessions on writing and sustainable production workflows, as well as complimentary physical therapy designed to address creator well-being.

Among the pilot participants were Junepurrr, creator of SubZero; instantmiso, known for Siren’s Lament and Fae Trapped; Ucheomaaa of Vibe Check!; and SLEEPACROSS, creator of Hand Jumper. Several winners from the 2025 Webcomic Legends Contest also took part.

Applications for the first 2026 residency opened through the Creator Portal on December 18, 2025. WEBTOON’s announcement described the program as being intended for Original Creators rather than the broader CANVAS community, making eligibility an important distinction for aspiring artists hoping to participate.

From creator networking to international visibility

WEBTOON is also expanding the ways creators can meet readers and fellow professionals outside the platform itself. In the United States, the company plans to bring more creators to major conventions, where they can participate in fan-facing events and build stronger relationships with their audiences.

The company also said it would increase its physical presence at selected conventions in international markets outside the United States, Korea, and Japan. Planned activities include creator meet-ups and portfolio reviews for artists in Europe and Southeast Asia.

For webtoon creators, these events offer more than publicity. A serialized comic’s success often depends on the strength of its fandom, and conventions provide opportunities for readers to connect with the people behind the stories. They also give emerging artists a chance to receive professional feedback in an industry where digital discovery can be both accessible and highly competitive.

Alongside these events, WEBTOON announced a VIP recognition program for select creators. Those creators will be invited to Korea to visit WEBTOON’s Korean office, meet industry figures, and connect with international talent. The program positions Korea not only as the historical center of the modern webtoon format, but also as a place where creators can learn more about the global business surrounding digital comics.

New tools for CANVAS creators

The 2026 initiative extends beyond high-profile Originals. WEBTOON promised new and improved monetization options for CANVAS creators, along with a redesigned dashboard intended to make series performance easier to understand.

Some of those changes have since begun rolling out. WEBTOON announced updates that lowered payment thresholds, simplified payout processes, and expanded access to Reward Ads. The platform also said creators with access to its Ad Revenue Sharing Program could lock up to six episodes behind an advertisement, increasing the number from three.

In March 2026, WEBTOON further announced a unified international CANVAS platform supporting distribution across seven languages: English, Spanish, French, Indonesian, Thai, Traditional Chinese, and German. The planned translation tools, expanded analytics, personalized discovery features, and broader access to ad-revenue sharing could give independent creators more opportunities to reach readers outside their original market.

Editorially, this may be the most consequential part of the expansion. A residency can help a relatively small number of established creators, but changes to discovery, translation, analytics, and monetization have the potential to affect a much larger section of the platform’s creator base. Whether those tools produce sustainable careers will depend on how widely they are available and how clearly creators can understand the rules attached to them.

Education, open houses, and a more visible support system

WEBTOON’s Creator Care teams will also host digital Open Houses for creators who are new to the platform. These sessions are intended to connect newcomers with Creator Care and Editorial staff, allowing them to discuss their goals and learn how to use the service more effectively.

The company is additionally redesigning its Creator Resource Hub. A planned video series will feature creator experiences and success stories, with practical advice drawn from artists and writers who have already built careers through WEBTOON.

This educational focus acknowledges that making a webtoon involves more than drawing attractive characters or developing a compelling premise. Creators must understand episode structure, production scheduling, audience engagement, platform analytics, monetization systems, and the physical stamina required for recurring releases. Better guidance cannot eliminate those pressures, but it can make the path less opaque for newcomers.

Why the expansion matters for readers

For readers, creator programs can seem like behind-the-scenes business news. In practice, they influence the comics themselves. Editorial development, healthier production habits, better access to translation, and more reliable financial tools can shape whether a series maintains its quality, reaches new audiences, or remains viable over the long term.

WEBTOON Chief Strategy Officer and Head of Global WEBTOON Yongsoo Kim said the company spent 2025 listening to creators and piloting support programs before expanding them in 2026. That framing presents the initiative as a response to creator needs, although the real test will be how creators experience the programs once they reach a broader audience.

The expansion also reflects the changing role of webtoon platforms. WEBTOON is no longer simply a place to upload and read comics; it is increasingly presenting itself as a complete creator ecosystem involving publishing, fandom development, analytics, monetization, events, international distribution, and adaptation-oriented intellectual property. For artists and writers, that can create new opportunities while also making the platform’s policies and support systems more important than ever.

For now, WEBTOON’s 2026 creator strategy is best understood as a work in progress. The residency, CANVAS updates, convention programs, and educational resources point toward a more structured career pipeline, but their long-term value will depend on accessibility, transparency, and whether creators can turn the available tools into genuinely sustainable working conditions.
