Summer Moon: The Quprids, HYBE’s magical-girl webtoon inspired by K-pop group ILLIT, expanded beyond Korea with official releases across several international WEBTOON services in October 2025. The launch gave ILLIT fans a new way to engage with the group’s youthful fantasy identity while extending HYBE’s growing push into connected music, comics, and original storytelling.

Created by HYBE and published through the NAVER WEBTOON ecosystem, the series combines high-school romance, supernatural adventure, and idol-inspired character design. It is not an adaptation of ILLIT’s real-life career, but a fictional story built around characters and themes associated with the five-member group.

A Magical-Girl Story Built Around ILLIT’s Image

Summer Moon: The Quprids follows five high school girls whose ordinary school lives collide with a larger magical conflict. The central setup focuses on young characters balancing friendship, romance, personal growth, and the responsibilities that come with becoming magical warriors.

WEBTOON’s official synopsis centers on Yeoreum, a high school student determined to find a boyfriend. Her plans change after she discovers a constellation shard and transforms into one of the Quprids, warriors with magical powers. While she tries to protect the galaxy, Yeoreum must also navigate her feelings for Gowon, the most popular boy at school, and the suspicious knowledge held by her childhood friend Doyun.

That combination gives the series a familiar but effective genre foundation. The story draws from magical-girl conventions, school romance, and everyday comedy rather than presenting its fantasy world as a grim or heavily serialized epic. Editorially, the appeal is clear: the supernatural premise creates room for action and lore, while the high-school setting keeps the emotional stakes close to the characters’ friendships and crushes.

From Korean Launch to Global WEBTOON Release

The Korean version premiered on NAVER WEBTOON on August 4, 2025, under the title 썸머문: 더 큐프리즈. According to the launch announcement, the series quickly reached No. 3 on NAVER WEBTOON’s trending chart, prompting requests from international fans for official translations.

The international rollout began on October 20, 2025, in the United States, Taiwan, and Thailand. Japan and Indonesia followed on October 21, while a French edition was scheduled for November. The releases were part of a six-region expansion designed to make the series available in local languages rather than limiting the story to Korean-speaking readers.

WEBTOON currently identifies HYBE as the series’ creator and classifies the title as fantasy. Its official English listing presents the story as a weekly series and places it alongside other HYBE-backed properties, including 7FATES: CHAKHO, THE STAR SEEKERS, and the broader DARK MOON projects.

How the Webtoon Extends ILLIT’s Fantasy Identity

ILLIT members Yunah, Minju, Moka, Wonhee, and Iroha serve as the inspiration for the five central characters. The webtoon uses fictional identities rather than simply placing the real performers into a slice-of-life version of their schedules, allowing the group’s public image to become the foundation for a separate fantasy narrative.

That distinction matters. Music tie-in comics can sometimes feel like extended promotional material, but Summer Moon is structured as an original story first. Its connection to ILLIT is visible in the character concepts, youthful tone, and magical-girl imagery, while the plot gives readers a reason to continue beyond recognizing the idols who inspired the cast.

The project also aligns with ILLIT’s broader creative presentation. The group’s name combines “I will” and “it,” suggesting individuality and the possibility of becoming something unique. Summer Moon: The Quprids translates that idea into a fantasy setting where identity, potential, and self-discovery are represented through magical transformation.

A Softer Alternative to HYBE’s Darker Story Worlds

HYBE has already used webtoons to expand the fictional universes connected to its artists. The DARK MOON series, in particular, established a more dramatic supernatural model through stories involving vampires, werewolves, school rivalries, and long-running lore. HYBE has said that the DARK MOON projects surpassed 200 million views worldwide, helping create an audience for future artist-linked stories.

Summer Moon occupies a noticeably different space. Its magical-girl premise, romantic tension, and bright school setting create a lighter entry point for readers who may not be looking for the darker mythology associated with DARK MOON. The series can still attract established HYBE-universe readers, but it is also positioned for fans of romance fantasy, coming-of-age stories, and colorful character-driven webtoons.

From a webtoon perspective, the premise is especially well suited to vertical-scroll storytelling. Transformation sequences, constellation imagery, magical weapons, and dramatic reveals can be staged through extended downward space, while school-life scenes can use shorter panels and quick transitions for humor. Whether the series leans more heavily into romance or cosmic adventure over time, its format gives the visual concept plenty of room to expand.

Who Should Read Summer Moon: The Quprids?

The series is an obvious recommendation for ILLIT fans who want a fictional companion to the group’s music and visual identity. It should also appeal to readers who enjoy magical-girl stories with a school setting, romantic subplots, and a cast built around contrasting personalities.

Readers expecting a direct biography of ILLIT or a detailed continuation of the group’s real-world career should approach the series differently. This is a fictional fantasy project inspired by the members, not a documentary-style account of their lives. Its strongest selling point is the way it turns recognizable idol imagery into an accessible webtoon premise with its own characters, conflicts, and rules.

As HYBE continues to develop artist-linked original stories, Summer Moon: The Quprids shows how varied that strategy can be. Instead of repeating the darker action formulas of earlier projects, the series offers a brighter magical-girl framework—one built around school romance, youthful mischief, and the idea that ordinary teenagers may be capable of extraordinary things.
