Witness Point #2 Preview: Small-Town Secrets Get Messy

Dark Horse Comics’ Witness Point #2 arrives in comic shops on August 19, 2026, pushing its small-town murder mystery into more dangerous territory. Deputy Marshal Priya Khabrani and Sheriff Carter “Kite” Calhoon are still investigating a dismembered body, but their efforts threaten to expose the criminal histories hidden behind the town’s witness-protection identities.

That premise gives the series an unusual blend of Midwestern noir, true-crime satire, and character-driven mystery. With a podcasting teenage crime club interfering in the investigation and a supposedly ordinary insurance office revealed as a secret sports book, the second issue promises to make Baraboo’s secrets even harder to contain.

A Murder Investigation with Too Many Suspects

The central mystery remains the death of the unidentified John Doe, whose severed body has turned the seemingly quiet Wisconsin community into a pressure cooker. As the investigation continues, Priya and Kite must determine whether the killing is connected to one of the town’s many relocated criminals—or to a secret that reaches beyond the witness-protection population.

Baraboo’s residents are not simply eccentric supporting characters. They are people who have been given new names, new jobs, and new lives after participating in the federal Witness Protection Program. The issue’s setup highlights several of these unlikely transformations, including a former Mafia hitman now working as a pizza maker, a former militia leader attempting to appear reformed, and a love-cult guru who apparently has not abandoned his old habits.

That makes every conversation potentially significant. A suspicious reaction may be evidence of guilt, fear, or simply the strain of living among people who know that one wrong revelation could destroy the town’s fragile arrangement.

Priya and Kite Take Different Approaches

The investigation also continues to test the partnership between Priya and Kite. Priya’s questioning style is described as abrasive and aggressive, a sharp contrast to Kite’s more community-minded approach. For the sheriff, protecting Baraboo’s residents is not separate from solving the murder; it is part of the job.

Priya, meanwhile, appears less interested in preserving the town’s carefully maintained calm. Her assignment is to investigate a killing, and the people standing in her way may be witnesses, suspects, or both. That conflict gives the series a strong procedural engine while allowing the creative team to explore the difference between official justice and the informal rules that keep a secret community functioning.

The tension is intensified by the True Crime Club, a group of teenage reporters whose new podcast risks compromising the investigation. Their involvement adds another layer to the story: Priya and Kite are not only trying to stay ahead of a murderer, but also a younger generation eager to turn the case into public entertainment.

The Art of a Town Coming Apart

Soo Lee’s artwork is central to the series’ tonal balance. The setting has the familiar visual language of a picturesque small town, but that normality is repeatedly disrupted by violence, paranoia, and strange criminal histories. The contrast allows ordinary locations—town offices, local businesses, public spaces—to carry an undercurrent of danger.

That approach was also noted in early response to the first issue. Reviews praised the series’ strong premise and large cast of distinctive characters, while highlighting Lee’s ability to move between mundane community life and more heightened genre material. The result is a setting that can feel cozy in one panel and deeply threatening in the next.

For readers who enjoy mysteries built around atmosphere and personality as much as clues, Witness Point offers plenty to examine. The story is not only asking who committed the murder. It is asking what happens when an entire town is built around concealment—and when the people living there begin to suspect one another.

What Readers Can Expect from Issue #2

The new issue appears to widen the mystery rather than narrow it. The attempted burning of the local insurance offices introduces a fresh crime, while the revelation that the building also housed a secret sports book suggests that Baraboo’s respectable surface may conceal a much larger network of illegal activity.

Whether the arson is connected to the dismembered body remains unanswered, but the development gives Priya and Kite another problem to solve. It also reinforces one of the series’ most appealing ideas: in Witness Point, even the most boring business may be a front for something far more dangerous.

Witness Point #2 is written by Nathan Fillion and Heath Corson, illustrated and covered by Soo Lee, and published by Dark Horse Comics. The issue is rated T+, runs 32 pages, costs $4.99, and is part of a planned four-issue series.

The first issue’s reviews generally described the book as an intriguing setup with an entertaining cast, while noting that its larger mystery had not yet fully revealed its emotional center. Issue #2 is the point where those introductions begin to carry consequences. As the investigation disrupts the town’s carefully guarded identities, the series has an opportunity to turn its clever premise into a more tightly connected conspiracy.

For mystery readers, crime-comic fans, and collectors following Nathan Fillion’s first original comic, this is a promising next step. Baraboo may look like a sleepy Wisconsin town, but its secrets are becoming impossible to keep buried.
