Absolute Batman #22 Cover Art By Jorge Molina Sells For Over $18,000

Original cover art for a retailer-exclusive edition of Absolute Batman #22 has sold for $18,050 at auction, nearly doubling its $9,500 opening bid. The piece, drawn by Jorge Molina for a Beachside Hobbies and Davis Rider Comics variant, offers a revealing look at how the booming Absolute Batman market is affecting both comic sales and original-art collecting.

The sale is notable because the comic itself was produced as a limited retailer-exclusive variant, while the artwork represents a unique, one-of-one collectible. For fans and collectors, that distinction is increasingly important: a rare printed cover may be difficult to find, but the original illustration used to create it exists in only a single physical form.

A Limited Variant With a High-Profile Artist

The Beachside Hobbies and Davis Rider Comics edition of Absolute Batman #22 was offered in two versions: 1,000 copies with trade dressing and 1,000 virgin copies without the logos and other standard cover elements. The variant was promoted around San Diego Comic-Con and also presold through Whatnot.

Molina’s cover was created separately from the regular interior art for the issue. DC’s official listing credits Scott Snyder as writer, Werther Dell’Edera as the interior artist, Frank Martin as colorist, and Nick Dragotta and Martin among the credited cover talent for the standard edition. Molina’s contribution belongs to the increasingly crowded field of retailer-commissioned cover variants surrounding the series.

That separation is part of what makes the auction interesting. Buyers were not bidding on a rare comic book alone, but on the original artwork behind one of the special editions produced during Absolute Batman’s current surge in popularity.

Why the Original Art Market Matters

Retailer-exclusive covers have become an important part of the modern comic-book business. Stores commission exclusive artwork, order a fixed quantity of books, and sell those editions directly to collectors. The arrangement can generate additional revenue for retailers while giving artists a prominent showcase in front of a highly engaged audience.

For the artist, the initial commission is only one part of the potential value. Signed copies, creator proofs, convention appearances, and the later sale of the original illustration can all add to the financial return. In the case of Molina’s Absolute Batman #22 cover, the $18,050 auction result demonstrates how quickly the original art can outpace the value of the printed edition.

That does not mean every retailer-exclusive cover will command a similar price. Original-art auctions depend on several variables, including the artist’s profile, the popularity of the character, the visual impact of the image, the timing of the sale, and the number of collectors competing for the piece. Still, the result establishes a compelling example of the economic ecosystem now surrounding major comic launches.

Absolute Batman #22 Arrives During a Sales Boom

The auction also benefits from the unusual momentum behind Absolute Batman. The series, launched by DC as part of the Absolute Universe, reimagines Bruce Wayne as a physically imposing engineer without the traditional advantages of the Wayne fortune. Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta’s original direction gave the book a distinctly harsher, more street-level identity, while the wider line positioned the title as one of DC’s major entry points for new readers.

Issue #22 went on sale July 8, 2026, with a story focused heavily on Harley Quinn’s history and her connection to the dangerous world surrounding Batman. The issue’s official description also teases the continuing development of the Robins and the escalating threats gathered around Gotham.

That narrative attention helps explain why variant activity remains so intense. A retailer-exclusive cover is easier to market when the issue has a major character reveal, a significant turning point, or a strong connection to the series’ expanding mythology. Collectors are not simply buying alternate artwork; they are buying a visual marker for a particular moment in the story.

Critical Interest Adds to Collector Demand

Reviews of Absolute Batman #22 have generally highlighted its Harley Quinn-centered storytelling, horror-inflected atmosphere, and willingness to reinterpret familiar DC mythology. Coverage has also praised the emotional weight of the issue and Dell’Edera’s ability to match the darker material, while noting that the slower, more intimate pacing may not appeal equally to every reader.

That kind of critical conversation can strengthen interest in the surrounding collectibles. When an issue becomes a talking point for its characterization or major revelations, its variant covers often receive a second wave of attention from readers who may have initially overlooked them. The effect is especially pronounced with a book whose retailer-exclusive program is already unusually visible.

For collectors, however, the $18,050 result should be treated as a record of one auction rather than a guaranteed benchmark for every Absolute Batman original. Printed variants remain far more accessible than original art, and the long-term value of either depends on sustained interest in the series. A hot title can cool, and a large number of exclusive covers can eventually make individual editions harder to distinguish.

A Snapshot of the Modern Batman Collecting Market

Molina’s sale captures the current collision between comic publishing, convention culture, retailer exclusives, and original-art collecting. Absolute Batman has become more than an ongoing monthly title: it is also a platform for variant programs, artist showcases, limited editions, and high-dollar memorabilia.

The bigger question is whether this level of demand can continue as DC manages the number and terms of retailer-exclusive covers. For now, the market is rewarding the artists and retailers able to connect a compelling image with a high-demand issue. Molina’s original Absolute Batman #22 cover is a particularly clear example: a single piece of artwork transformed a commissioned variant into an $18,050 collector’s centerpiece.
