Keiichi Sigsawa, the creator of Kino’s Journey and writer of Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online, has launched his first original manga story. Titled Kemono-tachi no Peregrinatio—also rendered as Peregrinatio Bestiarum or The Beasts’ Wandering—the series debuted on July 17 through Shogakukan’s Weekly CoroCoro Comic online magazine, pairing Sigsawa with artist Hayato Asaki.

For readers who follow webcomics, manga, and digital-first comics, the project is notable for more than its unusual post-apocalyptic premise. Sigsawa has spent decades building stories around travel, observation, survival, and the uneasy relationship between people and the worlds they cross. Kemono-tachi no Peregrinatio gives him a new format for those familiar interests while moving into a visual medium he has not previously led as an original manga writer.

A post-apocalyptic journey on the back of a giant beast

The manga takes place decades after giant beasts wiped out 90 percent of humanity. In the aftermath, surviving communities have withdrawn from one another, leaving the world divided between isolated human settlements and the enormous creatures that now dominate the landscape.

At the center of the story are Al, a young man, and Rico, a beast tamer. Together, they travel across the ruined world in a house constructed entirely on the back of Kuro, their giant wolf beast companion. Their goal is to locate human survivors who have chosen to live in seclusion.

That setup immediately places the series in the territory of post-apocalyptic adventure, creature fantasy, and road-story drama. The mobile home built on Kuro’s back is an especially strong visual hook: it turns the act of traveling into the manga’s central spectacle. Instead of moving from one conventional settlement to another, Al and Rico journey on a living, unpredictable foundation that is both transportation and companion.

Editorially, the premise also creates room for the kind of episodic encounters associated with travel narratives. Each destination can introduce a different survival strategy, community, danger, or attitude toward the beasts. Whether the story develops into a sweeping action adventure or a quieter series of human encounters remains to be seen, but the foundation allows for both.

Why Sigsawa’s move into original manga matters

Sigsawa began serializing Kino’s Journey in ASCII Media Works’ Dengeki HP in 2000. The long-running novel series follows Kino and the talking motorad Hermes as they visit different countries, generally staying no more than three days in each place. Its structure has always emphasized atmosphere, ideas, and moral uncertainty as much as conventional plot momentum.

Kemono-tachi no Peregrinatio appears to share that interest in movement through unfamiliar societies, but its premise shifts the scale dramatically. Where Kino’s Journey often focuses on the customs and contradictions of individual countries, the new manga begins with a world reshaped by mass extinction and the rise of giant beasts.

The visual collaboration with Hayato Asaki is equally important. Sigsawa’s earlier signature works were primarily novel series, meaning their settings and creatures were filtered through prose and illustration. In manga, the scale of Kuro, the architecture of the traveling house, and the remains of human civilization can be presented directly through page composition, character staging, and creature design.

Because the series is launching in an online manga publication, readers can also expect its reception to be shaped by digital reading habits. The available announcement confirms the platform and debut, but it does not provide a confirmed English-language release, chapter schedule, or adaptation announcement.

From Kino’s Journey to Gun Gale Online

Sigsawa’s best-known work remains Kino’s Journey, which has received multiple anime adaptations. A 13-episode television anime premiered in 2003, followed by theatrical films in 2005 and 2007. A new television anime debuted in 2017, introducing the property to another generation of anime viewers. Kadokawa shipped the series’ 24th novel volume in September 2025.

He also wrote the Gakuen Kino spinoff novels, which reimagined Kino as a high school girl. The spinoff later received a manga adaptation, demonstrating that the broader franchise has already crossed between prose, manga, and animation in several forms.

Sigsawa’s other major modern credit is Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online, a light novel spinoff of Reki Kawahara’s Sword Art Online. The series launched in 2014 and inspired a 13-episode anime season in 2018. Its second season debuted in October 2024, with Crunchyroll streaming the anime.

That background gives Kemono-tachi no Peregrinatio a particularly broad potential audience. Fans of Kino’s Journey may be drawn to the wandering structure and philosophical possibilities, while Gun Gale Online readers may be curious to see Sigsawa develop an entirely original setting without the framework of an existing franchise.

A promising fit for digital-comics readers

The new manga is not being presented as a conventional romance or battle series, at least from the currently available premise. Its clearest appeal is to readers who enjoy speculative worlds, creature-centered fantasy, survival stories, and journeys through civilizations with their own rules.

Al and Rico’s partnership could become the emotional anchor of the series, particularly because their traveling home depends on Kuro as much as they depend on one another. The setup naturally invites questions about trust: between the two travelers, between humans and beasts, and between isolated communities that may no longer share the same idea of what survival requires.

The strongest early distinction is the combination of intimate travel storytelling and enormous fantasy scale. A house carried by a giant wolf is an instantly recognizable image, but the concept also promises practical tensions involving shelter, food, movement, danger, and the fragile remnants of human society.

For now, Kemono-tachi no Peregrinatio is best viewed as an important new chapter in Sigsawa’s career rather than an announced multimedia franchise. Its launch marks his first original manga written from the ground up, and its digital publication gives readers a new way to encounter the themes of travel and survival that have defined much of his work.
