Eir Aoi is entering another bold phase of her career, and a new interview offers a closer look at the ideas shaping her next chapter. The anime music powerhouse discusses how she builds performances around a series’ story, how returning from hiatus changed her artistic outlook, and why she now wants to move beyond the sound audiences traditionally associate with her.

The conversation arrives as Aoi fronts two major 2026 anime openings: “MONSTER” for Classroom of the Elite 4th Season: Second Year, First Semester and “Unrealistic” for That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Season 4. The paired releases place her voice at the center of two very different worlds, from psychological school drama to large-scale fantasy adventure.

For longtime fans, the projects also underline how firmly Aoi remains connected to anime music. She made her major-label debut in 2011 with “MEMORIA,” the ending theme for Fate/Zero, and later became known for songs including “IGNITE” from Sword Art Online II, “AURORA” from Mobile Suit Gundam AGE, and “sirius” from Kill la Kill. Her official biography also highlights performances at venues such as Nippon Budokan and Yokohama Arena, as well as concerts across international markets.

Anime stories remain at the heart of her process

Aoi explained that she does not approach an anime tie-in as a standalone pop song. When she is invited to perform for a series, she reads scripts or the original source material to understand the setting, themes, characters, and emotional direction before bringing those elements into the recording.

That preparation allows the song to function as more than an opening played before an episode. Aoi sees her performance as part of the work’s larger world, with the anime influencing the emotion and expression she brings to the track. She also emphasized that this connection extends beyond the lyrics, reaching the recording process and music videos as well.

That approach is especially useful for her two latest openings. “MONSTER” was officially described as an aggressive track built around Aoi’s powerful, weighty sound while adding digi-rock elements. The song also features lyrics written by Aoi herself, giving her a particularly direct role in shaping its relationship with Classroom of the Elite.

Two openings, two different anime worlds

Classroom of the Elite 4th Season: Second Year, First Semester moves the anime into the students’ second year, where new exams and shifting relationships raise the stakes at the elite school. The official anime site lists “MONSTER” as the opening theme and identifies the season as a 2026 production from Lerche, with music production handled by Lantis.

By contrast, “Unrealistic” introduces Aoi’s voice to the fourth season of That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime. Rather than outlining separate technical formulas for the two songs, Aoi focused on the privilege of expressing each series’ identity through the lyrics, studio work, music videos, and future live performances.

The two tracks were released together as part of a double anime-theme project on April 22, 2026. That pairing is the bigger surprise: it presents Aoi in two contrasting modes at once while still allowing her signature intensity to connect both songs.

A more personal direction after hiatus

Aoi’s most revealing comments concern the way she viewed herself as an artist after returning from hiatus. She said she previously spent too much time wondering whether a song matched what listeners expected from “Eir Aoi,” or whether it fit the image people had already formed of her.

Now, she wants to make decisions from a more independent place. That means exploring genres she has not tried before and creating music that may initially feel unexpected for her audience. Her goal is not simply to repeat the dramatic anime-rock style that made her famous, but to test the boundaries of what her voice and identity can express.

“Breaking free” from that established image is a theme that runs through the interview. Aoi said she is particularly interested in music that goes against people’s expectations, leaving the exact form of that experimentation open for the future.

An international audience is part of the conversation

Aoi also reflected on the global reach of anime music. Before performing overseas, she said she never imagined hearing international audiences sing her songs along with her. Seeing fans connect the music to the anime worlds that inspired it remains especially meaningful to her.

That international perspective now informs her recording approach. Aoi said she tries to sing in a way that can resonate with anyone experiencing the work, whether they are listening in Japan or elsewhere. Her official biography notes that she has performed in 15 countries and regions, helping explain why anime remains such a natural bridge between her music and listeners around the world.

For now, “MONSTER” and “Unrealistic” offer the clearest preview of this evolving era. Aoi has also indicated that she hopes to carry the passion behind both songs into her live performances, while her future projects may reveal just how far she is willing to move beyond expectations. That next creative turn is worth keeping an eye on.
