Kyle Higgins is expanding his Black Market newsletter into a showcase for phone-first comics with Black Market Presents, a new initiative built around short-form stories from emerging and established creators. The project matters to webtoon and digital-comics readers because it treats the phone screen—not the printed page—as the starting point for the reading experience.

Announced through Higgins’ Black Market newsletter, the initiative aims to place original comics directly inside a familiar inbox environment while giving creators another way to reach an audience. Its first preview story, Black Eye, comes from writer Rich Douek, artist Nir Levie, and colorist Buddy Beaudoin.

A Newsletter Built for Scrollable Comics

The central idea behind Black Market Presents is straightforward: present complete or short-form comic stories in a format designed for mobile reading. Rather than treating digital publication as a simple replica of a print page, the project is being shaped around vertical scrolling, the same basic interaction that has made webtoons so natural to read on smartphones.

That distinction is important. Traditional comics often depend on fixed pages, carefully arranged spreads, and a reader’s ability to take in several panels at once. Phone-first comics can create a different rhythm, using spacing, reveals, pauses, and sequential movement to control how quickly a reader encounters each beat. Higgins’ newsletter initiative appears positioned to explore that format without requiring readers to visit a conventional comics platform.

The project’s official description characterizes the stories as original short-form work delivered directly to subscribers. It also emphasizes that the initiative is intended as a curated platform for creators whose work Higgins and his team want to bring to a wider audience.

Black Eye Opens the Showcase

The initial preview for Black Market Presents features Black Eye, created by Rich Douek, Nir Levie, and Buddy Beaudoin. The supplied announcement presents the story as an early look at what the format will offer, rather than as a conventional ongoing series with a publicly announced episode schedule.

That makes Black Eye an important test case for the initiative. Its role is not only to introduce a new comic, but also to demonstrate how a story can be presented when the newsletter and phone screen are part of the publication method. For digital-comics fans, the presentation may be as significant as the premise: the project is effectively asking what a comic can look like when the reader’s scrolling gesture becomes part of the page design.

By April 2026, the official Black Market overview identified Black Eye as one of the first two stories released through the initiative. It also listed Inferno Girl Interlude as another early entry, suggesting that the project is intended to support multiple short comics rather than operate as a one-off experiment.

A Platform for Creators, Not Just a Massive-Verse Extension

Higgins is best known to many readers for work including Nightwing, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, and the creator-owned Radiant Black, which forms part of the broader Massive-Verse published by Image Comics. That background gives Black Market Presents an obvious connection to Higgins’ larger creative operation, but the official announcement makes an important distinction.

The featured stories are not described as secret pilots or automatic extensions of the Massive-Verse. They are presented as independent projects chosen because Higgins and his collaborators believe the creators deserve a larger platform. That clarification helps define the initiative’s purpose: it is less a franchise pipeline than a curated publishing experiment.

The distinction may also make the project more appealing to readers who enjoy creator-owned comics but do not want to study an existing universe before trying something new. Each short story can function as its own introduction, allowing readers to discover a creative team without needing prior knowledge of Radiant Black or any other Black Market project.

Why the Mobile Format Matters

Higgins’ announcement frames the initiative against the difficulty newer creators face when trying to get work noticed. Digital comics have lowered some barriers to publication, but visibility remains a major challenge. A newsletter with an established readership can offer creators a direct route to potential readers, even if it cannot guarantee that every project will break through.

For webtoon readers, the most interesting aspect is the project’s deliberate focus on phone-based reading. Many digital comics are still designed first as print pages and adapted later for screens. A format created specifically for scrolling can instead prioritize timing, vertical composition, and the small-scale intimacy of reading on a phone.

That does not automatically make every story a webtoon in the Korean-platform sense. The announcement does not identify Black Market Presents as a series published through WEBTOON, Tapas, or another established webtoon service. Instead, it uses a newsletter-based delivery model, placing the comics inside Higgins’ own publishing ecosystem.

What Creators Should Know

The official Black Market announcement states that submissions are open through a creator form, but it includes an important limitation: the team is looking for finished comics rather than unsolicited pitches or undeveloped concepts. The post also notes that the operation is small and cannot guarantee that every submission will be reviewed.

That requirement reflects the project’s emphasis on presentation-ready short comics. It also separates Black Market Presents from a traditional editorial development program. Creators are not being invited to send in a premise for the team to build from scratch; they are being asked to submit completed work that can potentially be shared with the newsletter’s audience.

For readers, the result could be a useful discovery space for compact stories across different genres and visual styles. For creators, it offers a potentially meaningful form of exposure, though its long-term reach and publishing scope remain to be established.

A Small Experiment With Larger Possibilities

Black Market Presents is still a young initiative, so it is too early to judge its eventual impact or predict whether any featured story will develop into a longer series. What is already clear is that Higgins is treating the newsletter as more than a place for announcements and franchise updates.

The project combines three increasingly important parts of digital comics culture: direct-to-reader publishing, mobile-first design, and creator discovery. If the format works, it could give short comics a more visible home while encouraging creators to think about scrolling as a storytelling tool rather than merely a delivery method.

For now, Black Eye provides the first glimpse of that approach, while Inferno Girl Interlude shows that the concept is already expanding beyond a single preview. Readers interested in experimental digital presentation, creator-owned comics, and the future of phone-based storytelling will have a reason to keep an eye on what Black Market Presents delivers next.
