Despero is making his move on the cosmos in Justice League Unlimited #22, the latest DC Comics chapter from writer Mark Waid and artist Dan Mora. Arriving Wednesday, August 26, 2026, the issue places the League in a desperate galactic conflict while the fallout from the Watchtower’s Amnesty program threatens to tear the team apart from within.

For readers following DC’s expansive post-Absolute Power Justice League, this issue promises a sharp escalation. The heroes are not simply confronting another powerful enemy; they are facing a takeover built around overwhelming force, psychological manipulation, and the weaponization of their own fallen allies.

Despero Claims Powers Planet

The issue’s central conflict begins when the reborn arch-dictator Despero seizes control of Powers Planet. DC’s official solicitation frames the situation as a “galactic fire sale” for the fate of the cosmos, with the Justice League outnumbered, outmatched, and outgunned by the resulting assault.

That setup gives Despero a battlefield far larger than a conventional superhero showdown. Powers Planet is not merely another location for the League to defend; its capture appears to position Despero at the center of a broader campaign of conquest. The scale of the threat also fits the ambition of the current Justice League Unlimited series, which treats the League as a vast network of heroes capable of responding to crises across Earth and beyond.

The preview material hints that Despero’s advantage is not limited to raw power. Captain Giffeno of Kyxraia searches for information about the tyrant, while the Justice League discovers that fallen comrades have been used as pawns in Despero’s mind games. That revelation adds a personal dimension to the battle and suggests that the villain’s greatest weapon may be his ability to turn the League’s history against them.

Guy Gardner also finds himself hopelessly overmatched, reduced to a “plaything” by Despero. The moment reinforces the danger facing the heroes: even a famously aggressive and powerful Green Lantern is unable to control the encounter.

The Amnesty Program Comes Home to the Watchtower

While Despero’s forces create chaos on a galactic scale, the League is dealing with a crisis much closer to home. The fissures caused by the Amnesty program finally erupt aboard the Watchtower, bringing the series’ internal tensions into the open.

The solicitation does not reveal every detail of the conflict, but its placement alongside the Powers Planet assault is significant. The League cannot afford to be divided when its enemies are exploiting confusion and fear. The Watchtower storyline may therefore function as more than a secondary subplot; it could test whether the team’s ambitious, inclusive structure can hold together under extreme pressure.

That ensemble approach has been one of the defining characteristics of Waid and Mora’s run. DC has described the series as a Justice League made up of an exceptionally broad selection of heroes, giving the creative team room to pair characters who do not always share the spotlight. The result is a book that can move between large-scale cosmic action and smaller character conflicts without abandoning the idea that the League’s strength comes from its variety.

Mark Waid and Dan Mora Continue Their Cosmic Superhero Run

Justice League Unlimited #22 features Mark Waid as writer and Dan Mora as artist and cover artist. Their collaboration has made the series one of DC’s clearest showcases for classic superhero spectacle, combining a large cast with bright, kinetic visual storytelling.

Mora’s art is particularly well suited to an issue built around a galactic battle. Despero’s takeover, the League’s uneven odds, and the appearance of mind-controlled allies all call for moments that can communicate scale quickly. At the same time, the Watchtower material should give Mora opportunities to emphasize reactions, tension, and the crowded dynamics of a team under strain.

Waid’s larger challenge is managing the issue’s competing pressures. Despero’s assault could easily dominate the narrative, while the Amnesty storyline carries its own continuity and character consequences. The appeal of the series lies in how it balances those elements: the cosmic threat provides momentum, but the interpersonal fractures give the action emotional stakes.

Release Details and Collector Interest

DC Comics is scheduled to release Justice League Unlimited #22 on August 26, 2026. The standard edition is listed at $4.99, while the issue is also accompanied by a range of $5.99 variant covers from Bruno Redondo, Nathan Szerdy, Karen S. Darboe, Gerald Parel, and Serg Acuña.

Those variants give collectors several distinct approaches to the issue, particularly as Despero’s storyline pushes the series into a visually dramatic phase. For readers more interested in the ongoing narrative, the issue is also part of a broader run that has already received collected-edition treatment. DC has published Justice League Unlimited Vol. 1: Into the Inferno, collecting the opening portion of Waid and Mora’s series, while later volumes continue to make the run accessible to readers who prefer trade paperbacks.

As a single issue, #22 appears designed for fans who enjoy the League at its most expansive: a dangerous villain, a cosmic battlefield, compromised allies, and a team forced to confront its own unresolved divisions. Despero may control Powers Planet, but the more immediate question is whether the Justice League can remain united long enough to take it back.
