Ghost Mikawa’s Mercenary Sisters is heading from light novel to manga, with artist Ka Sakana scheduled to launch the adaptation on Kadokawa’s Comic Newtype online manga magazine on Tuesday, July 21, 2026. The announcement gives readers a new entry point into a story that combines private military work, survival drama, and the quieter emotional rhythms of an unlikely sisterly bond.

Originally titled Shimai Yōhei in Japanese, the series is written by Ghost Mikawa, the creator of Days With My Stepsister and My Friend’s Little Sister Has It In for Me! Kadokawa published the novel with illustrations by kappe on July 25, 2025, after Mikawa first launched the story on the Kakuyomu website in June of that year. A Rookie Mercenary Enters a War Zone

The manga follows 17-year-old Rinko Isumi, a newcomer who applies to a private military company almost on a whim. She expects something resembling part-time work, but instead finds herself sent to a foreign conflict zone alongside veteran mercenary Nagisa Mizusaki.

Rinko arrives without the practical knowledge she needs to survive. In a place where the language, culture, and daily routines are unfamiliar, Nagisa teaches her everything from handling a firearm to opening military rations. The setup creates an immediate contrast between Rinko’s inexperience and Nagisa’s hard-earned competence, while giving the story a clear framework for gradual character development.

Kadokawa’s official description presents the novel as a story about two women who are not related by blood but come to trust each other like sisters. That relationship appears to be the heart of the series: the conflict zone provides the danger, but the emotional focus rests on how Rinko and Nagisa learn to depend on one another without losing their individual identities. Why the Premise Stands Out

Mercenary Sisters is not framed simply as a military action story. Its central appeal comes from the tension between the setting’s inherent danger and the ordinary, practical details of staying alive. Learning how to use equipment, share food, understand local customs, and judge personal boundaries can be just as important as the larger missions surrounding the characters.

That balance gives the manga a potentially distinctive position among light-novel adaptations. The premise offers room for action and suspense, but it also supports quieter scenes built around instruction, routine, and trust. For readers who enjoy character-driven drama, the mentor-and-rookie dynamic may be as important as the combat material.

The official novel synopsis also emphasizes that Rinko and Nagisa are not presented as heroes destined to change history. They are simply trying to complete their assignments and survive another day. That grounded perspective could help the adaptation avoid turning its conflict setting into a conventional power fantasy, although the manga’s eventual tone and pacing will depend heavily on Ka Sakana’s visual interpretation.

From Light Novel to Online Manga

Comic Newtype provides the adaptation with a digital-first home within Kadokawa’s manga ecosystem. The series is therefore arriving as an online Japanese manga rather than a confirmed Korean webtoon or vertical-scroll production. At present, the announcement identifies Ka Sakana as the manga artist, although the romanization of the name has not been confirmed.

That distinction matters for readers accustomed to webtoons. Comic Newtype’s online format gives the adaptation a natural digital audience, but there is no confirmed information indicating that Mercenary Sisters will use vertical-scroll presentation, international webtoon platforms, or an English-language release. Readers outside Japan will need to wait for an official licensing announcement before assuming where the manga will be available in translation.

As with any novel-to-manga adaptation, the opening chapters will be important in establishing how the story handles exposition. Rinko must learn the mechanics of mercenary life, but the series also needs to communicate the emotional rules of her relationship with Nagisa. If the adaptation can make those lessons feel like part of the drama rather than simple background explanation, the premise has strong potential for serialized reading.

A New Series from the Creator of Two Adapted Franchises

Mikawa’s existing work gives the announcement additional context. My Friend’s Little Sister Has It In for Me! began in 2019 and has received a manga adaptation, while Days With My Stepsister began publication in 2021 and has also expanded into manga and anime. Both series are associated with relationship-focused storytelling, making Mercenary Sisters an intriguing departure in setting even as it continues Mikawa’s interest in bonds formed through everyday interaction.

The author’s previous works have also demonstrated a path from novel serialization to broader multimedia treatment. However, no anime, live-action, game, or other adaptation has been announced for Mercenary Sisters. For now, the manga is the next confirmed stage in the series’ development, and its launch will show whether the story’s unusual combination of military danger and domestic-scale emotional detail translates effectively to comics.

For readers drawn to action with a strong interpersonal core, Mercenary Sisters is worth watching as it begins its Comic Newtype run. Its most promising ingredient is not simply the idea of a teenage mercenary entering a war zone, but the contrast between that dangerous environment and the careful, day-to-day trust built between Rinko and Nagisa.
