Doraemon is making a rare jump from manga and anime history into the modern retro-gaming spotlight. Hamster Corporation will release the 1986 Famicom game as Console Archives Doraemon for Nintendo Switch 2 and PlayStation 5 on July 30, 2026, marking the title’s first official Western release.

For fans who know Doraemon primarily through the long-running anime or Fujiko Fujio’s original manga, the announcement offers a chance to experience one of the franchise’s earliest console adventures without tracking down vintage Japanese hardware. It also continues Hamster’s broader effort to bring overlooked home-console games to current platforms through its Console Archives series.

A Lost-Friends Adventure Built Around Doraemon’s Gadgets

Hudson Soft originally released the game for Nintendo’s Famicom in 1986. Its story begins with a time-machine malfunction that leaves Nobita, Shizuka, Gian, and Suneo lost, sending Doraemon on a search-and-rescue mission across unfamiliar worlds.

Doraemon’s Secret Gadgets form the heart of the adventure. That setup makes the game a natural fit for the character: rather than relying on a conventional hero’s arsenal, Doraemon’s progress is tied to the creative possibilities of his futuristic tools. The premise also preserves the franchise’s familiar balance of comedy, danger, and problem-solving, even as the game places those elements inside an action-adventure format.

Hamster has described Console Archives Doraemon as an action-adventure title. The company also released a trailer for the announcement, giving prospective players a look at how the Famicom-era game has been presented for modern audiences.

Why This Release Matters to Western Doraemon Fans

The original game never received a Western release, making its arrival on Switch 2 and PS5 more significant than a routine retro reissue. Many classic games tied to major manga and anime properties remained confined to Japan, especially during the Famicom era. As a result, international fans often encountered those games only through screenshots, fan documentation, or later franchise titles.

This release changes that access point. Players who discovered Doraemon through television, films, translated manga, or more recent games will be able to explore an early licensed adaptation directly. It is also a useful reminder that the franchise’s history extends well beyond its best-known animated adventures.

For webtoon and digital-comics readers, the appeal is familiar. Older games based on comics often function as alternate adaptations, translating a character’s visual identity and recurring story mechanics into a different medium. In this case, the Secret Gadgets provide the bridge between Doraemon’s episodic manga storytelling and the more structured goals of a console adventure.

Part of Hamster’s Growing Console Archives Lineup

Console Archives Doraemon is part of Hamster’s series of rereleases devoted to classic games originally launched on home consoles. The lineup spans multiple eras and genres, with titles being brought to Nintendo Switch 2 and PlayStation 5 rather than remaining limited to their original systems.

The series is designed to make older games more approachable through modern conveniences, including customizable controls, save options, screen-layout adjustments, and visual filters inspired by CRT displays. Those features may be especially useful for players encountering an eight-bit game for the first time, while longtime fans can use them to shape a more nostalgic presentation.

Hamster first teased the Doraemon release when it announced the Console Archives series in February 2026. The game’s July 30 launch now places one of Japan’s most recognizable manga characters alongside other archival releases from the Famicom, PlayStation, and other console generations.

A New Way to Revisit a Global Manga Institution

Fujiko Fujio A and Fujiko F. Fujio created the Doraemon manga, which ran from 1970 to 1996. The two creators worked together before parting professionally in 1987, after which Abiko used the Fujiko Fujio A name and Fujimoto used Fujiko Fujio F, later known as Fujiko F. Fujio.

The manga became the foundation for one of the world’s most successful children’s-media franchises, inspiring animated films and three television anime series. The third television anime began in 2005 and remains ongoing in Japan, underscoring the character’s continuing cultural presence decades after the manga’s original run.

The game’s Western arrival also comes as the Doraemon anime franchise expands its international distribution efforts. Production company CAKE is partnering with TV Asahi to distribute the anime catalogue in the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and several European, Middle Eastern, and African markets, with Italy, Spain, Portugal, and Turkey excluded from that arrangement.

That broader international visibility gives Console Archives Doraemon a timely context. It is not a new adaptation or a modern remake, but a preserved piece of the franchise’s early game history finally becoming available outside Japan. For retro players, it is a newly accessible Famicom curiosity; for manga and anime fans, it is an opportunity to see how Doraemon’s world was translated into interactive form in 1986.
