Why ‘Call of Duty’ Is Making Its Fanatics Fest Debut With ‘Modern Warfare 4’ — And Bringing ‘Obsession’ Star Inde Navarrette Along for the Mission

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is stepping into unfamiliar territory this weekend as the first video game to take a headlining position at Fanatics Fest in New York City. Activision is using the sports-centered convention to put the upcoming Xbox title directly into players’ hands—and to bring Obsession star Inde Navarrette, a longtime Call of Duty streamer, into the conversation.

The strategy is larger than a standard convention booth. With Modern Warfare 4 scheduled to launch on October 23, 2026, Activision is treating Fanatics Fest as a major cultural crossover: part hands-on preview, part celebrity showcase, and part argument that competitive gaming belongs in the same mainstream entertainment space as professional sports. Why Call of Duty Is Playing in Sports’ Home Turf

Fanatics Fest 2026 is taking place at New York City’s Javits Center from Thursday, July 16, through Sunday, July 19, with organizers expecting approximately 150,000 attendees. The event features sports properties and personalities connected to Formula One, FIFA, the NBA, baseball, wrestling, and more—but Activision wants Call of Duty to feel like one of the convention’s central attractions rather than an add-on.

Activision chief marketing officer Tyler Bahl told Variety that the decision came from the overlap between Call of Duty players and sports fans. According to Bahl, many players purchase only one or two major games each year, with Call of Duty and a sports title often occupying those spots. He also pointed to professional athletes discussing the communication and teamwork benefits of playing the franchise together.

That connection gives Activision a practical reason to appear at Fanatics Fest. The company is not simply attempting to reach gamers in a new location; it is targeting an audience that may already have an interest in both competitive sports and multiplayer shooters. The crossover also reflects how increasingly blurred the boundaries have become between traditional athletics, esports, streaming, and celebrity culture.

Modern Warfare 4 Wants Players to Try It Early

After two consecutive Black Ops releases, Activision is taking a different approach to the marketing campaign for this year’s game. Bahl said the team wanted to return to the idea of bringing the game to public events and allowing fans to play before launch, rather than relying primarily on betas and conventional promotional beats.

That makes the Fanatics Fest activation especially important. Attendees can try Modern Warfare 4 ahead of its October release, giving Activision an opportunity to generate direct word-of-mouth among highly engaged players. The official game announcement confirms that the title is being developed by Infinity Ward and will launch across Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. The game’s campaign is set against a conflict involving North Korea and South Korea, while also returning to the ongoing story of Task Force 141. Official material describes a worldwide crisis, and the Fanatics Fest presentation is expected to emphasize the title’s larger action spectacle as well as its connection to New York City. Inde Navarrette Brings a Genuine Fan Connection

Navarrette’s presence gives the panel a more personal angle than a typical celebrity appearance. The actress, known to viewers for Obsession, has spent years streaming Call of Duty gameplay and is being presented as a serious player rather than simply a famous guest attached to a marketing campaign.

She told Variety that her older brother introduced her to the series when she was around seven or eight years old. Her early memories include playing Modern Warfare 2 in local multiplayer, favoring the Rust map, using the SCAR as her primary weapon and the Thumper as her secondary. Her brother, she admitted, usually won.

Navarrette also described Call of Duty as a nostalgic escape that demands constant attention. That perspective helps explain why Activision sees her as a valuable representative of the franchise’s broader pop-culture reach. She is not being positioned as a newly recruited influencer; she is someone whose relationship with the series predates her current visibility as an actor.

Bahl said a formal partnership between Navarrette and Call of Duty is not out of the question, but the immediate goal is to reconnect her with the community that helped shape her early interests. That distinction matters. For now, her Fanatics Fest appearance is confirmed as a panel and promotional collaboration—not an announcement that she has joined the game’s cast or a future project.

New York, the NBA and a Wider Modern Warfare Universe

Activision is also leaning heavily into the convention’s location. In Modern Warfare 4, Captain John Price begins part of the story in New York City while pursuing Vladimir Makarov. Bahl highlighted the city’s presence in the trailer, along with references to New York culture and music, including the influence of Wu-Tang Clan.

The Fanatics Fest programming reflects that local connection. The Call of Duty presentation includes Bahl, Infinity Ward director Mark Grigsby, NBA star Kevin Durant, and Navarrette, while celebrity gaming matchups are expected to feature figures associated with the Knicks, Yankees, and WWE. The event also includes brand activations involving Aston Martin and Polaris. Durant’s involvement is another deliberate bridge between gaming and sports. The basketball star has already been connected to Call of Duty: Mobile, making him a natural participant in a panel about the franchise’s place in popular culture. The broader message is clear: Call of Duty is no longer being marketed only as a shooter for dedicated players, but as a shared language among athletes, entertainers, streamers, and fans.

Could Fanatics Fest Tease the Call of Duty Movie?

The weekend may also bring news connected to the planned Call of Duty film. The source report identifies the project as a Paramount Pictures production directed by Peter Berg, with Taylor Sheridan involved, although Activision has not disclosed what announcement or “association” might be revealed at Fanatics Fest.

That wording keeps expectations measured. Bahl suggested that something significant could be announced, but there is no confirmed information that Navarrette will appear in the film. The actress said she would be interested in contributing, even joking that she would enjoy playing a computer voice, but her comments should be read as enthusiasm rather than casting news.

For Activision, the timing is strategically useful. Modern Warfare 4 arrives on October 23, 2026, with its New York setting, sports partnerships, celebrity panel, and early playable demo all working toward the same objective: making the next Call of Duty feel like an event that extends well beyond the gaming audience. Whether that approach translates into renewed excitement will depend on the finished game, but Fanatics Fest gives the franchise an unusually visible stage on which to make its case.

Modern Warfare 4 is scheduled for worldwide release on October 23, 2026. The game is being developed by Infinity Ward and will be available on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2.
