DC’s long-delayed Swamp Thing finale is nearly complete. Swamp Thing 1989 #4, written by Rick Veitch and illustrated by Tom Mandrake, brings the lost conclusion to Veitch’s late-1980s saga to its intended endpoint, more than three decades after the original storyline was interrupted.

The issue arrives from DC Black Label on July 22, 2026, and promises a final confrontation involving Swamp Thing, John Constantine, Abby, a newborn child, and the returning Anton Arcane. For longtime readers, this is more than another chapter in the character’s history: it is the publication of a story once thought destined to remain unfinished.

A Finale Decades in the Making

Swamp Thing 1989 is a four-issue project designed to complete the storyline Rick Veitch began during his celebrated run on the character. The first issue restored the material originally intended to serve as Swamp Thing #88, while issues #2 through #4 adapt the remaining chapters that would have followed as issues #89 through #91.

That history gives the series an unusual place in DC publishing. Rather than presenting a modern reinterpretation of Veitch’s work, the project is positioned as a continuation of a specific unfinished era. The final issue therefore carries the weight of both a new release and a long-delayed piece of comics history.

DC announced that Tom Mandrake would illustrate the newly produced chapters of the storyline. Mandrake is a veteran Swamp Thing artist, making his involvement a natural fit for a project rooted in the title’s late-1980s mythology. Rick Veitch also provides the cover for the issue.

Arcane Returns as the Threat Escalates

The preview centers on the birth of the child and Anton Arcane’s attempt to claim them as his final prize. Arcane’s return from hell immediately places the story in the gothic, supernatural territory that has long defined Swamp Thing’s most ambitious adventures.

John Constantine and Abby’s closest friends are left to protect the baby, while Swamp Thing must find a way back to the people he loves. The solicitation also frames the conflict on a larger scale, suggesting that the child’s fate could influence whether the world is consumed by what it describes as “unalloyed hatred.”

That combination of intimate stakes and cosmic consequence feels appropriate for the conclusion to Veitch’s run. The preview does not reveal how the conflict resolves, but it makes clear that the issue is designed as an endpoint rather than a routine installment. Readers are being asked to return to a story whose original momentum was cut short and finally discover where it was meant to go.

Mandrake’s Art Completes the Visual Continuity

For a story with such a complicated publishing history, the artwork is an especially important part of the presentation. Mandrake’s involvement connects the new material to the visual language of Swamp Thing’s earlier era while allowing the previously unpublished chapters to exist as finished comics rather than archival scripts.

DC’s announcement also identified Trish Mulvihill as the colorist for issues #2 through #4, with Todd Klein handling lettering. The creative approach was described as an effort to honor the palette and spirit associated with the original Swamp Thing material, while still producing a contemporary comic for modern readers.

That balance should make the issue particularly appealing to readers who value continuity of tone and craft. It also gives collectors a tangible conclusion to a storyline that has been discussed for years as one of DC’s most famous unfinished projects.

Release Details and Collector Appeal

Swamp Thing 1989 #4 is scheduled for release on July 22, 2026. The issue is listed at 32 pages with a $4.99 cover price and carries a 17+ mature-readers rating under DC Black Label. A foil open-order variant is also solicited at $7.99.

As the concluding chapter of a four-issue limited series, the comic is likely to attract several overlapping audiences. Swamp Thing readers will be interested in the completion of Rick Veitch’s storyline, while DC collectors may see the issue as an important artifact tied to one of the character’s most notable creative periods. Readers who followed the first three issues will also be looking for narrative closure after the series’ long build toward its final confrontation.

New readers can approach the issue as a major finale, but the strongest appeal will likely belong to fans familiar with Veitch’s work and the history surrounding the abandoned original publication. The story’s significance comes not only from its supernatural conflict, but from the fact that this conclusion has finally been given a place in the comic-book record.

With Anton Arcane closing in, a child at the center of an apocalyptic struggle, and Swamp Thing fighting to return to his loved ones, Swamp Thing 1989 #4 is positioned as both a dramatic finale and a publishing milestone. After decades of anticipation, the saga is finally ready to reach the ending its creators originally intended.
