Image Comics and Skybound are preparing to launch Terminal, a new superhero series from writers Robert Kirkman and Joe Casey, with artwork from Andy Kubert, David Finch, and Arthur Adams. The first issue arrives in comic shops on July 22, 2026, and its combination of heavyweight creators, superhuman warfare, and a family-centered mystery makes it one of the more closely watched original superhero debuts of the summer.

Graphic Policy’s preview outlines a world where two violent forces with superhuman abilities are fighting a secret war across the globe. At the center of that conflict is Marilyn Howe, whose search for her missing sister, Alessandra, leads her toward revelations involving genetic power, identity, and the possibility of losing everything she understands about herself.

A Superhero Mystery With Dangerous Questions

The central premise gives Terminal a familiar superhero foundation while leaving plenty of room for the series to establish its own mythology. Hidden factions, unexplained abilities, and a protagonist pulled into a conflict she does not fully understand are classic genre ingredients, but the missing-sister angle gives the opening issue an immediate emotional hook.

Marilyn is not introduced as someone already operating within the superhero world. Instead, her personal investigation appears to be the doorway into a much larger and more dangerous reality. That structure could make the series accessible to readers who are not looking to catch up on years of continuity. There is no indication that Terminal is connected to an existing Marvel or DC universe, so new readers can approach the book without needing a map of prior events.

The solicitation also emphasizes that the conflict is not built around a simple battle between heroes and villains. The two opposing forces are described as violent and morally ambiguous, suggesting that the book intends to complicate the usual good-versus-evil framework. Whether that ambiguity becomes a major thematic strength will depend on how deeply the series develops its factions and characters beyond the opening mystery.

An All-Star Creative Team With a Deliberate Visual Identity

Robert Kirkman and Joe Casey are co-writing the series, bringing very different but complementary superhero credentials to the project. Kirkman is best known for creator-owned works including Invincible and The Walking Dead, while Casey has written across superhero, science-fiction, and creator-owned comics, including work on Uncanny X-Men and Wildcats.

Andy Kubert provides the primary art for the first issue, with David Finch and Arthur Adams also contributing to the series’ larger artistic presentation. Dave McCaig is credited as colorist, and Rus Wooton handles lettering. That lineup gives Terminal an unusually strong visual profile before readers even see how the story develops.

Kubert’s presence is especially significant for a superhero launch built around new characters. His work has long been associated with energetic action, expressive anatomy, and dramatic page composition. Finch and Adams, meanwhile, bring instantly recognizable approaches that could help the series evolve visually as its story expands. The use of multiple major artists may also allow different arcs, locations, or factions to develop distinct visual identities.

For collectors, the creative roster is a major part of the book’s appeal. Image Comics has also announced a broad range of variant and incentive covers for the first issue, including contributions from Frank Miller, Bill Sienkiewicz, Rob Liefeld, Kubert, Finch, and Adams. That makes the debut relevant not only to readers seeking a new superhero story but also to fans tracking notable cover art and modern comic-book production trends.

What the First Issue Needs to Establish

The challenge for Terminal will be balancing its large-scale premise with Marilyn’s personal story. Secret wars and genetic powers can quickly become exposition-heavy, particularly when a debut issue has to introduce multiple factions and a new mythology. The missing-person investigation gives the creative team a grounded narrative thread, but the issue will need to make Marilyn feel like more than a guide through the setting.

The book is also being positioned as violent and unpredictable, with comparisons aimed at readers who enjoy the high-impact superhero action of Invincible and the mutant-focused intrigue associated with X-Men. Those comparisons communicate the intended audience, but they also establish expectations. Terminal will need to offer more than graphic confrontations and mysterious powers if it is going to distinguish itself in an increasingly crowded creator-owned superhero market.

Early critical response remains limited, but one published review praised the debut’s blend of superhero warfare, cosmic horror, mystery, and emotional tension. That assessment should be treated as an early snapshot rather than a consensus. Still, it suggests that the first issue may be aiming for a broader tone than a straightforward action comic, combining spectacle with unsettling world-building and family drama.

Release Details and Collector Appeal

Terminal #1 is scheduled for release from Image Comics on July 22, 2026. The issue is listed at 40 pages with a cover price of $4.99, giving readers an oversized opening chapter for the new series.

Its release arrives with considerable attention surrounding the creators, but the most important question will be whether the story can turn that attention into lasting interest. A famous artist lineup can sell a first issue; character development, coherent mythology, and satisfying momentum are what keep readers returning.

For fans of original superhero comics, Terminal offers a straightforward reason to pay attention: it is a new universe with no established continuity to navigate, built by creators who understand both the traditions and excesses of the genre. For collectors, the issue’s extensive cover program adds another layer of interest. For everyone else, the real test begins with Marilyn Howe’s search—and what she discovers waiting at the end of it.
